The Behavioral Health Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides safe, patient-centered psychiatric nursing care under the direction of a Registered Nurse and the licensed provider. The LPN assists in the delivery of therapeutic interventions, medication administration, health monitoring, and crisis stabilization for individuals experiencing mental health or substance use conditions. The role supports patients in an acute behavioral health setting by promoting safety, emotional stabilization, and recovery-focused care in alignment with organizational standards and regulatory expectations.Responsibilities:
Patient Care & Assessment Support - Gathers data related to patient behavior, withdrawal symptoms, medical conditions, and mental health status to report to the RN or provider. Monitors and documents changes in patient condition and promptly communicates concerns to the supervising RN or provider. Participates in implementing individualized care plans and evaluates patient response to interventions. Medication Administration & Monitoring - Administers medications safely, including psychotropic and PRN medications, according to state scope of practice and facility policy. Monitors, documents, and reports medication reactions, side effects, and therapeutic responses. Supports medication education and adherence consistent with patient care plans. Therapeutic Engagement & Interventions - Uses trauma-informed communication, motivational interviewing principles, and recovery-focused approaches when interacting with patients. Participates in group activities, facilitates nursing groups, milieu engagement, and therapeutic programming as directed by the RN or treatment team. Assists with crisis intervention strategies including verbal de-escalation techniques. Safety & Compliance - Monitors patient safety through observation level documentation, rounding compliance, and milieu safety checks. Participates in the safe application, monitoring, and documentation of restraint or seclusion interventions when clinically necessary, following legal and regulatory requirements. Reports safety concerns, environmental risks, and behavioral escalations promptly. Collaboration & Communication - Works collaboratively with the RN, psychiatrist, nurse practitioners, therapists, and mental health technicians to support continuity of care. Documents patient care in accordance with organizational charting standards, CMS/DNV requirements, and state regulations. Maintains therapeutic boundaries and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and professional ethics. Professionalism & Accountability - Participate in staff huddles, treatment team meetings, and continuing education to support high-quality care. Demonstrates reliability, teamwork, and adaptability in a fast-paced behavioral health environment. Performs additional duties as assigned.Credentials:
