Job Description

Job Summary:
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, or Charge Nurse, the Licensed Practical Nurse performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care duties (pediatric, adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patients). Effectively interacts with the patient, significant other(s), and other health care team members, while maintaining standards of professional nursing. ______________________________________________________________________________________
Essential Duties:
1. Adheres to the mission, philosophy, and standards of nursing and implements the policies/procedures of the hospital and nursing department. 2. Maintains a personal commitment to the welfare of the (assigned) patient either as a team member or as a team leader under the direction of the Registered Nurse. 3. Collects data on assigned patients as directed by the Registered Nurse, reassesses the patient's condition and nursing needs, focusing on biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care. 4. Demonstrates applied knowledge base and nursing implementation skills for the appropriate patient population according to the requirements as established by the Oklahoma Nurse Practice Act, hospital and nursing department. An LPN may not give chemotherapeutic drugs or administer blood or blood products. 5. Verifies and carries out physician orders in an accurate/timely manner. 6. May assign certain responsibilities to other nursing team members (certified nursing assistant, nursing assistant). 7. Reports outcomes as well as any pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients to the appropriate person, i.e., physician, RN, etc. 8. Performs documentation in patient record in a timely, accurate and concise manner. 9. Participates in economical utilization of supplies and ensures that equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner. 10. Coordinates nursing care of patients when scheduled for surgery or other procedures. 11. Demonstrates an awareness of and sensitivity to patients' rights as identified by the hospital. Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care. 12. Formulates and uses effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients, and significant others. 13. Demonstrates an awareness of responsibility and accountability for nursing practice which falls within the prescribed scope of practice for LPNs as defined in the Oklahoma Nurse Practice Act. 14. Participates in the maintenance of a clean and safe environment. 15. Adheres to changing environment, e.g., staffing patterns, patient assignments. 16. Adheres to attendance and dependability standards and uses hospital time conscientiously. 17. Promotes and maintains a professional image of the unit, nursing department and hospital. Conforms to dress code.
Periodic Essential Job Duties:
Performs any special tasks/assignments as assigned for which competency has been achieved. Responds efficiently in emergency situations following established policies/procedures, remaining calm, and documenting events. Assist with examinations/treatments/special tests and procedures under the direction of the RN and/or physician. Participates, as assigned, in teaching plans for patients.
Qualifications:
Active Licensed professional nurse in the state of Oklahoma.
Education/Training:
Current licensed is required. Current BLS and ACLS certifications are required. Basic computer skills.
Skills:
Maintains a high degree of credibility, independence, integrity, confidentiality and trust. Strong communication and leadership skills are essential.
Physical Effort:
Must be able to stand and traverse 50% of the time. Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery. Frequently position self to provide patient care and lifting up to 50 lbs to a height of 3-4 feet and to traverse inside the hospital.
