May specialize in administrative or clinical work, or specialize in a particular area of medicine, i.e. assisting in the office of an ophthalmologist (eye specialist). Works in medical offices.
We are seeking an experienced, highly motivated, and detail-oriented Medical Assistant (MA) to join our busy, high-volume Rheumatology practice. The MA will play a critical role in ensuring efficient patient flow, providing excellent direct patient care, and supporting our providers (Physicians, PAs, NPs) in managing patients with complex rheumatologic conditions. Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Clinical):
Patient Intake & Preparation:
Triage patients and prepare them for examination. Accurately measure and record vital signs, document the chief complaint, and perform patient screenings as per provider guidelines.
Medical History:
Obtain, verify, and accurately record patient medical, social, and medication histories, paying special attention to rheumatologic symptoms, disease activity, and current treatment plans.
Injections and Medications:
Administer prescribed medications, including subcutaneous and intramuscular injections (e.g., biologics, corticosteroids), as directed by the provider and within the scope of practice. Assist with
Procedures:
Set up and assist the provider with in-office procedures such as joint aspirations and injections, ensuring sterile technique is maintained.
Patient Education:
Relay instructions from the provider to patients regarding medications, lab/imaging requirements, follow-up care, and assist with patient education materials.
Documentation:
Accurately and timely document all patient interactions, vital signs, procedures, and patient education in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Administrative & Operational):
Appointment Management:
Ensure efficient patient flow by managing room turnover, responding promptly to provider requests, and helping to manage clinic schedules.
Coordination of Care:
Schedule diagnostic tests (labs, X-rays, MRIs, etc.) and specialty referrals. Track and follow up on test results to ensure they are available for provider review.
Patient Communication:
Handle high volumes of patient telephone calls, electronic messages (e.g., in-basket/portal messages), and faxes, addressing clinical questions, scheduling needs, and coordinating communication between the patient and provider team.
Inventory & Maintenance:
Monitor and maintain inventory of medical supplies, medications, and instruments. Clean and prepare exam rooms, ensuring cleanliness, organization, and adherence to infection control protocols.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED required. Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program. Current CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) or RMA (Registered Medical Assistant) certification is required (e.g., AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NHA). OR Bachelor's degree in Science (preferred). Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Medical Assistant in an ambulatory clinic setting. Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proven ability to manage a demanding workload and multi-task effectively in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a professional and compassionate demeanor when interacting with patients, especially those managing chronic pain and complex diseases. Strong knowledge of medical terminology. Demonstrated ability to administered injections safely and proficiently. Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy in patient records, medication management, and prior authorization processes. Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to HIPAA and all other regulatory guidelines. Bilingual (preferred)
