About Our Practice Our optometry practice was founded in 1945 by Dr. Robert Roush in Kendallville, Indiana. Over the years, we have grown to include five doctors serving three locations throughout Northeast Indiana. As our patient base continues to expand, we are seeking a dedicated Medical/Optical Assistant to support our optometrists and contribute to smooth, efficient daily operations. Position Summary The Medical/Optical Assistant plays a key role in delivering high‑quality patient care by preparing patients for exams, performing diagnostic testing, assisting with documentation, patient education and supporting overall office workflow. This position blends clinical and retail tasks, patient interaction, and administrative responsibilities in a fast‑paced, team‑focused environment. Key Responsibilities Prepare patients to be seen by the doctor. Obtain medical history and chief complaint, chart information accurately and confidentially. Provide excellent patient care and customer service throughout the visit. Perform preliminary and specialized diagnostic testing. Assist patients with contact lens care and insertion/removal education. Assist patients with selection of frame and lenses based on doctor recommendations and patient preference. Administrative Duties Manage patient records, including scanning, data entry, and updating information in the practice management system. Perform tasks such as faxing, copying, making phone calls, and organizing patient files. Open and close the office following established procedures. Respond promptly to patient questions and refer issues when necessary. Workflow & Team Support Help manage front‑end workflow and patient flow throughout the day. Report performance or policy concerns to the practice manager. Assist with training team members to support a high‑performance, low‑turnover environment. Maintain a positive, professional workplace that promotes teamwork, safety, and strong communication. Work to resolve difficult customer situations with professionalism and empathy. Safety & Equipment Operate clinical and office equipment safely and effectively (full training provided). Sanitize and maintain equipment according to safety standards. Follow all practice policies, procedures, and safe work guidelines. Qualifications Required Strong communication skills and a desire to work as part of a team. Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including standing, walking, sitting, and occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs). Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to prioritize tasks, stay organized, and manage time effectively. Reliable, professional, and patient‑focused. Preferred 2+ years of front‑end or customer service experience. Experience in team‑oriented environments and customer‑service‑focused roles. No prior optometry experience required; full training provided. Physical & Work Environment Requirements Work performed in an office environment with periods of standing, walking, and sitting (up to one hour or more at a time). Requires clear vision, hearing, and verbal communication. Must be able to handle high work volume, multiple tasks, frequent interruptions, and deadlines. Must be available for occasional extended hours during high‑demand periods or emergencies. One late evening shift per week (until 6:30 PM). Pay:
$13.00 - $16.00 per hour
