A Medical Assistant assists physicians and other medical specialists with routine administrative or clinical tasks. Organizes patient records, schedules appointments, and prepares medical equipment. May specialize in administrative or clinical work, or specialize in a particular area of medicine, i.e. assisting in the office of an ophthalmologist (eye specialist). Works in medical offices.
The Supervisory Medical Support Assistant (MSA) position(s) serves as the direct line supervisor for all MSA staff within their assigned clinical area/group, Lead Medical Support Assistant(s) and all Medical Support Assistant (MSA) staff. This supervisor position is specifically for Medical Administration Service in the Specialty Care / Surgery Clinics sections.

To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must be deemed at least equivalent to that gained in a conventional U.S. program by a private organization specializing in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials. Documentation Requirements for Proof of High School Completion or higher If using post-high school education to substitute for experience at the GS-04 or GS-05, you must submit a copy of your unofficial or official college transcript with your application. If selected, to meet the basic requirement of high school education or equivalent and prior to a firm job offer being extended, applicants must provide one of the following as verification of the education requirement if not covered under the grandfathering provision: Copy of high school diploma OR high school transcript (unofficial or official) OR GED Certificate OR homeschooling completion OR proficiency certificate issued by a State or Territorial Board or Department of Education OR college transcript (official) Licensure/Certification/Registration . Grade Determinations :
In addition to the basic requirements for employment, candidates must meet the following grade-determining criteria for placement at grade levels specified. GS-08 Experience. One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following
KSAs:
(a) Advanced knowledge of managing or leading patient support staff in a clinic. This includes independently utilizing reference sources, decision making, and 13 empowering the team to collaborate and resolve problems within a complex systems environment. (b) Ability to provide the full range of administrative and supervisory duties to at least one subordinate MSA supervisor or team leader in a patient support setting which includes assignment of work, performance evaluations, selection of staff, and recommendation of awards and/or advancements. (c) Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with internal and external customers to ensure quality/continuity of care and ensure compliance with established policies and regulations. (d) Ability to provide briefings, orientations, staff development, and training in a patient support setting. (e) Ability to manage fiscal matters, forecast resource and equipment needs, and identify budget needs.
Preferred Experience:
Six months experience of clerical, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level leading or supervising MSA's or equivalent administrative patient support staff in a non-VA medical inpatient, outpatient, or interdisciplinary setting.

May be required to wear personal protective equipment and undergo annual TB screening or testing as conditions of employment.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in an office/clinic setting with minimal risks that requires normal safety precautions; the area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. However, the work environment requires someone with the ability to handle several tasks at once in sometimes stressful situations.
