Job Description
Job Summary Summit Gastroenterology is seeking a motivated, dependable, and compassionate Medical Assistant to join our growing private gastroenterology practice. This position combines both clinical and administrative responsibilities and plays an essential role in delivering high-quality patient care while supporting the daily operations of the clinic. We welcome applicants with prior healthcare experience through employment, volunteer work, clinical shadowing, internships, or externships. This position is an excellent opportunity for pre-PA, pre-medical, pre-nursing, and other pre-health students seeking meaningful hands-on clinical experience and direct patient care hours. While previous experience with gastroenterology is not required, applicants should be comfortable with medical terminology, eager to learn, and committed to providing exceptional patient care in a fast-paced outpatient specialty clinic. Clinical Responsibilities Room patients and prepare them for provider evaluation. Obtain and accurately document vital signs, medical histories, medication lists, allergies, and chief complaints. Assist the physician during office visits and minor procedures. Prepare and review patient charts prior to appointments. Coordinate laboratory, imaging, endoscopy, and pathology results. Assist with prescription requests and medication refills under physician direction. Process prior authorizations for medications and procedures. Coordinate referrals, diagnostic testing, and specialty services. Provide patient education and instructions as directed by the physician. Maintain accurate documentation within the athenaOne electronic medical record (EHR). Administrative Responsibilities Answer incoming phone calls professionally and assist patients with scheduling and clinical questions. Check patients in and out of appointments. Verify insurance information and obtain necessary referrals and authorizations. Collect copayments and assist patients with billing-related questions. Scan and upload outside medical records, imaging reports, operative notes, and pathology reports into the EHR. Coordinate communication with pharmacies, imaging centers, infusion providers, hospitals, and referring physicians. Assist in maintaining an organized and efficient clinic workflow. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in a healthcare or medical setting through employment, volunteer work, shadowing, internships, or externships. Confidence using medical terminology. Familiarity with athenaOne or another electronic health record (EHR) system is preferred but not required. Ability to accurately obtain and document basic vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, weight, oxygen saturation, and BMI. Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail. Professional communication and outstanding patient service skills. Comfortable multitasking in a fast-paced outpatient clinic. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with physicians and staff. Proficiency with basic computer applications and electronic documentation. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus, but not required. Education High school diploma or equivalent required. Medical Assistant certification is not required . Current students or recent graduates pursuing careers in healthcare are encouraged to apply.
