This temp-to-hire role offers the flexibility of remote work with an onsite option as needed. - Lancaster, California Department Surgical Services / Operating Room Employment Type Contract (13 weeks) OR Per Diem — at-will Schedule 40 hours per week; four (4) 10-hour shifts Shift Days — varied start times On-Call Weekday, weekend, and holiday call rotation required Pay Rate $33.
25 per hour (good-faith estimate; see Compensation) Reports To OR Charge Nurse / Surgical Services Manager Position Summary The Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) Surgical Technologist functions as a sterile member of the surgical team, assisting the surgeon, surgical first assistant, and registered nursing staff before, during, and after cardiovascular and other operative procedures. Under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse and in accordance with the policies of Antelope Valley Medical Center (AVMC), the CVOR Tech prepares the operating room and sterile field, anticipates the needs of the surgical team, and maintains strict aseptic technique to ensure patient safety throughout the perioperative experience. This is a contract (13-week) or per diem, at-will, travel surgical technologist assignment supporting cardiovascular, trauma, orthopedic, and robotic-assisted surgical caseloads. Essential Duties & Responsibilities The following duties are representative and not exhaustive. Additional duties may be assigned by AVMC as necessary to meet operational and patient-care needs:
- Prepare the cardiovascular operating room prior to each procedure, ensuring a sterile environment and that all required instruments, sutures, supplies, implants, and equipment are available per surgeon preference cards.
- Open sterile supplies and set up the sterile field using strict aseptic technique; perform sterile gowning, gloving, and draping of the patient and equipment.
- Pass instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies to the surgeon and first assistant, anticipating the needs of the surgical team during cardiovascular, trauma, orthopedic, and robotic-assisted procedures.
- Operate and manage specialized surgical, robotic, and monitoring equipment in accordance with manufacturer and facility guidelines.
- Perform accurate counts of instruments, sponges, sharps, and supplies with the circulating nurse before, during, and after each procedure.
- Handle and prepare tissue specimens, medications on the sterile field, and surgical implants according to facility protocol.
- Maintain a safe, orderly, and sterile environment; assist with patient positioning, transport, and turnover of the room between cases.
- Collect and remove contaminated items at the completion of cases and assist in restocking sterile supplies.
- Provide input for updates to physician preference cards at the surgeon's request.
- Participate in the facility-wide infection-control plan and continuous quality-improvement processes.
- Respond to surgical emergencies and assist the surgical team as directed, including during on-call hours.
- Comply with all AVMC policies, The Joint Commission standards, AORN recommended practices, OSHA, and HIPAA requirements. Requirements & Experience
- Surgical Technologist Certificate (Certified Surgical Technologist).
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
- NIHSS (NIH Stroke Scale) certification — annual renewal required by AVMC.
- Minimum two (2) years of Operating Room experience.
- Minimum one (1) year of travel (contract) experience.
- Trauma, Orthopedics, and Robotics experience required.
- Completed skills checklist required at the time of submission. Additional Requirements
- Weekday, weekend, and holiday on-call rotation required.
- Must work weekends and holidays as requested by AVMC.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation. - Frequent standing and walking for extended periods (often the length of a surgical case, which may exceed several hours).
- Frequent bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, kneeling, and repetitive hand and wrist motions.
- Frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling; ability to lift and carry instrument trays and assist with patient positioning (lifting up to approximately 25-50 lbs, consistent with AORN safe-handling guidance).
- Fine manual dexterity, tactile sensitivity, and the ability to handle small instruments with precision.
- Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and hearing adequate to monitor the surgical field and respond to verbal direction.
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, sharps, surgical smoke, anesthetic gases, radiation (lead apron use during fluoroscopy/robotics), latex, chemicals, and temperature variation within the OR environment.
- Use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) throughout the shift.
