Full Job Description Purpose:
Responsible for translating healthcare services, procedures, diagnoses, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes. The role requires meticulous attention to detail, a thorough understanding of medical terminology, and knowledge of coding systems such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS. The Medical Coder ensures accurate and timely submission of claims, which is crucial for patient billing and reimbursement processes. On-site work required. Hybrid option may be available following successful completion of training. Must reside in
CO. RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS ROLE
Assign appropriate codes to diagnoses, procedures, and services (heavier focus on office visits and pathology) using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems. Analyze medical records and documentation to ensure completeness and accuracy for coding purposes. Adhere to all regulatory and coding guidelines, including HIPAA, CMS, and other applicable laws. Prepare and submit accurate and timely billing claims to insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid, and other payers. Conduct regular audits to identify discrepancies, resolve coding errors, and ensure the accuracy of submitted claims. Work closely with healthcare providers, billing teams, and other departments to clarify diagnoses, obtain additional information, and ensure accuracy. Stay updated on changes in coding guidelines, participate in continuing education, and train other staff members as needed. Other duties as assigned.
DESIRABLE QUALITIES IN A CANDIDATE
High school diploma or equivalent required. Certification in medical coding (e.g., CPC, CCA, CCS) is required. Minimum of 1-2 years of medical coding experience in a healthcare setting. Experience with ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems. Experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR) and practice management software. Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology. Attention to detail and accuracy in coding and billing practices. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Proficiency in using medical coding software and MS Office Suite. Ability to communicate effectively with healthcare providers and staff.
