An Emergency Medical Director within emergency medical services is a physician who provides guidance, leadership, oversight and continuous quality improvement (CQI) for the practice of local EMTs and paramedics within a predefined area. Typically board-certified in emergency medicine or pediatric emergency medicine. Generally responsible for either the creation of protocols for treatment by prehospital providers or providing leadership to the group of physicians who assist with the provision of medical oversight depending on which model of service delivery and which model of medical control are operating.

Provide immediate diagnosis, treatment, and stabilization for emergency patients in a fast-paced setting. Perform assessments, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and develop treatment plans. Collaborate with healthcare team members to ensure comprehensive care. Document patient information accurately and communicate effectively with patients and families. Maintain current knowledge of emergency medicine practices and participate in quality initiatives. Qualifications include MD or DO, active license, board certification, ACLS/PALS/ATLS (unless ABEM), and at least three years of ER experience post-residency.
