Job Description

Ophthalmology Medical Director Rutland, VT | $350,000 to $450,000 per year | Full-Time, Hospital-Employed An independent community hospital in Vermont is seeking a full-time Ophthalmology Medical Director to lead its hospital-employed ophthalmology practice. The practice includes an additional ophthalmologist, an optometrist, and a support staff of Certified Ophthalmic Assistants. This is a combined clinical and administrative leadership role serving an established patient population across central and southern Vermont.
Schedule:
Full-time. Call rotation of 1:4. Dedicated OR block time in an on-site procedure center.
Compensation:
$350,000 to $450,000 per year, base salary commensurate with qualifications and experience, with productivity-based incentive compensation above base. What You'll Do In the Medical Director capacity, you will provide clinical and operational leadership for the ophthalmology practice. This includes setting and maintaining clinical protocols, driving quality improvement initiatives, and providing guidance and oversight to the clinical team. You will work collaboratively with hospital administration and the broader medical staff to support practice growth and maintain standards of care. Clinically, you will manage a high-volume, established patient panel delivering comprehensive medical and surgical ophthalmic care. Surgical volume is accommodated through dedicated OR block time in an on-site procedure center equipped for high-volume cases. The call schedule operates on a 1:4 rotation shared with the team. Required Qualifications Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school Successful completion of an accredited Ophthalmology residency program Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Ophthalmology Active, unrestricted medical license in Vermont, or eligibility to obtain licensure prior to start Clinical experience managing a surgical ophthalmology caseload in a hospital or hospital-affiliated practice setting Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in a medical director, department chief, or formal clinical leadership role Subspecialty fellowship training (retina, glaucoma, cornea, or anterior segment) Experience in a community hospital or independent hospital practice model Established familiarity with PSLF-eligible employment structures and public service loan forgiveness program requirements Experience with quality improvement, peer review, or credentialing processes at the department level Compensation and Benefits Base salary of $350,000 to $450,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience Productivity-based incentive compensation above base Signing bonus Relocation expense reimbursement Educational loan repayment program; employer is a qualifying Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) employer Medical, dental, and vision insurance Fully paid medical malpractice insurance including tail coverage CME time and CME allowance To apply, submit your resume through this posting.
