A Medical Secretary provides secretarial work that requires specialized knowledge of medical terminology and procedures, insurance and billing processes and medical records management. Works with physicians and other clinicians. May gather intake information from patients scheduled for appointments at an office.
Greets visitors, ascertains purpose of visit, and directs them to appropriate staff. Interviews patients to complete documents, case histories, and forms such as intake and insurance forms. Compiles and records medical charts, reports, and correspondence using a computer and various software programs. Transmits correspondence and medical records by mail, email, or fax. Schedules and confirms patient diagnostic appointments, surgeries, and medical consultations. Answers telephones and direct calls to appropriate staff. Receives and routes messages and documents such as laboratory results to appropriate staff. Operates office equipment such as voicemail messaging systems, and uses word processing, spreadsheet, and other software to prepare reports, invoices, financial statements, letters, case histories, and medical records. Maintains medical records, technical library, and correspondence files. Performs various clerical and administrative functions such as ordering, organizing and maintaining an inventory of supplies. Manages clinician calendars regarding patient visits, office procedures or outpatient facilities. We perform surgeries at other facilities so you will need to correspond and coordinate scheduling of surgical patients. Assists with set up disposal, and performance of minor procedure equipment in the office such as syringes, needles, injectable medications. Setting up and breaking down procedure room set-up, properly disposing of waste, medical waste, and sharps and cleaning procedure room, cleaning and sterilizing appropriate equipment and testing any office appliances per local regulation. Operate a mobile X-ray machine under direct supervision (will be oriented and directed - radiation protection is provided) Provide patients with simple interventions including intramuscular and subcutaneous injections of medications (training provided)
