Healing Addiction in Our Community Serenity Mesa is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing education, prevention, and awareness surrounding substance use disorders affecting New Mexico communities. Founded in April 2010 by a group of parents and grandparents concerned about the growing heroin epidemic among local youth, Serenity Mesa was created to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families impacted by addiction. We are seeking an energetic, dependable, and detail-oriented Receptionist / Medical Billing Specialist to join our team. This dynamic position combines front desk responsibilities with medical billing and accounts receivable functions to ensure exceptional patient service and accurate revenue cycle management. The ideal candidate will be professional, organized, and capable of working independently in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Position Summary As the first point of contact for patients, families, and visitors, the Receptionist / Medical Billing Specialist plays a vital role in creating a welcoming environment while supporting billing operations, insurance claims management, and administrative functions. This position requires strong customer service skills, extensive knowledge of medical billing processes, and a commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and operational efficiency. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesReception and Administrative Duties Greet patients, visitors, and guests in a friendly and professional manner. Answer and direct incoming telephone calls promptly and courteously. Schedule patient appointments and manage provider calendars. Perform patient check-in and check-out procedures. Collect and verify demographic information, insurance information, and patient documentation. Maintain accurate patient records within EMR/EHR systems. Perform data entry with a high degree of accuracy. Process incoming and outgoing mail, faxes, and correspondence. Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming reception area. Assist with general office and administrative duties as assigned. Medical Billing and Revenue Cycle Duties Review and interpret Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) and remittance advice. Identify denial reasons and take appropriate corrective action. Understand insurance allowable amounts and reimbursement methodologies. Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits. Access insurance carrier portals and websites to obtain claim status information and download EOBs. Follow up on unpaid, rejected, and denied claims. Process claim appeals, redeterminations, reconsiderations, and audit responses. Manage accounts receivable balances and assist with collections activities when necessary. Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and payer guidelines. Required Qualifications Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a medical office or healthcare setting required . Strong data entry and accuracy skills. Excellent telephone and customer service skills. Exceptional organizational and time-management skills. Strong math and analytical skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft Office applications. Experience with EMR/EHR systems and medical billing software. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information professionally. Required Knowledge and ExperienceInsurance and Billing Knowledge Knowledge of reading and interpreting insurance EOBs. Understanding of claim denial reasons and appropriate resolution processes. Knowledge of insurance deductible applications and patient responsibility calculations. Understanding of insurance allowable amounts and reimbursement structures. Knowledge of insurance verification processes. Experience navigating insurance company websites and portals. Denials and Appeals Management Extensive experience working insurance denials. Knowledge of filing and managing appeals. Experience with redeterminations and reconsiderations. Familiarity with insurance audits and audit response procedures. Ability to research and troubleshoot billing and reimbursement issues. Skills and Abilities Thorough understanding of: Accounts Receivable (A/R) Electronic billing processes EOB review and interpretation Insurance benefits and coverage verification Claims management Appeals and denials resolution Collections processes Ability to: Work independently with minimal supervision.
