Job Description

The Regional Eye Center is looking for a Surgical Coordinator. The ideal candidate will be responsible for all aspects of insurance pre-certification and operative paperwork preparation to ensure proper reimbursement for services and a smooth experience between office, surgical facility, and patient.
Essential functions and responsibilities:
Verifies patient eligibility and benefits by initiating website and telephone verifications for authorizations of various services ordered/rendered for assigned providers including pre-certifications, pre-determinations, deductible, and co-pay information prior to services being rendered. Sends appropriate letters and medical records for predetermination, approval, and appeals if required. Documents comments and information related to patient eligibility and benefits in both practice management and E.H.R. Also, documents any patient communications appropriately within the patient's electronic health record. Prepares appropriate paperwork for minor surgeries, cataract surgeries, and all other surgeries performed at any ambulatory surgery center or hospital under the supervision of the lead tech or lead nurse in an accurate and timely manner. This includes but not limited to: Physician Orders, History and Physical, Demographics and Insurance, Charge Card, Consent Forms, Co-Management Forms (when applicable), Medication/Allergy Form. Keeps lead nurse/tech informed of insurance information that may affect surgery schedule. Acts as an effective liaison between the patient, office, co-managing office, and surgical facility in various aspects of pre/post-operative preparations to ensure correct coding, insurance filing, scheduling, etc. Electronically shares patient records with surgical facility and insurance companies.
Patient communication:
Contacts patient and notifies of any estimated financial responsibility. Initiates financial arrangements for patients when necessary. Answers telephone inquiries regarding insurance and authorizations for all office services, surgical procedures, and/or related requests. Schedules all patient post-operative appointments as appropriate. Notifies department supervisor of any problems or changes. Follows all office policies and procedures as set by the company. Maintains patient confidentiality. Requires excellent communication skills and a keen understanding of patients with sensory impairments and medical disease. Ability to type, minimum 35 wpm and use CRT. Efficient use of calculator. Ability to interact with public / physicians. Good organizational and multi-tasking skills as well as strong verbal communication skills. Preferred knowledge in Nextgen Electronic Practice Management software. Excellent verbal, written, and listening skills. Must have a high level of comfort and ability with web-based products. Effective problem solving, computer, and organizational skills required. Detail oriented with a focus on excellent customer service. Must be self-motivated and demonstrates ability to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently and as a team member. Capable of meeting schedule volumes as established by the lead technician or lead nurse. Required knowledge of CPT, diagnosis codes, and medical terminology. (Ophthalmology preferred) Strong knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurances. (Applicable clinical/insurance pre cert experience preferred) Proficient use of Electronic Health Records, copier/fax, and phone system a must.
