Job Overview:
Recovery Assistant Under the direct supervision of the Director of Community-Based Services , the Recovery Assistant provides a flexible range of face-to-face supportive assistance in accordance with a Recovery Plan. The goal is to enable clients with chronic mental illness to maintain a home/apartment, encourage the use of existing natural supports, and foster involvement in social and community activities. Major Responsibilities1. Hands-Off Personal & Household Assistance Performs tasks if the participant is unable (due to physical or psychiatric disability), or assists/cues them to perform:
Cueing for dressing, personal grooming, and hygiene ( strictly no hands-on assistance ).
Safety:
Appropriate use of emergency medical services. 2. Engagement & Healthy Habits Assists or cues the participant to actively engage in: Family, social, recreational, and faith-based or natural community supports (e.g., social clubs). Routine medical/dental services and adherence to scheduled appointments (clinical, vocational, educational, and judicial/court). Prescribed medication use and self-administration. Healthy behaviors (diet, exercise, and stress alleviation). 3.
Risk Mitigation & Companionship Risk Reduction:
Assists or cues clients to avoid substance abuse, overspending, unnecessary conflicts, and risky behaviors (e.g., unprotected sex, smoking, unsafe driving/no seatbelts, unsafe relationships, criminal activities).
Companionship:
Establishes helpful relationships by escorting clients to appointments, reading to/for them, and discussing hobbies, sports, or recreational activities.
Disability Reduction:
Focuses on restoring functioning, full community re-integration, and independent participation. 4. Administrative & Professional Duties Participates in waiver Recovery Plan development and quarterly update meetings if requested by the DMHAS Support Coordinator . Maintains excellent communication with involved community providers. Completes and submits all required documentation in a timely manner. Completes 6 hours of continuing education training annually to maintain the Recovery Assistant Certification.
Must be at least 18 years old with a minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
Transportation:
Valid Connecticut driver's license and use of a safe, road-worthy vehicle to assist clients with transportation.
Tech Skills:
Proficient in Microsoft 365, web-based platforms, and Adobe PDF.
Preferences:
Experience working in-home and with clients with chronic mental illness is preferred. Background Checks & Compliance Hiring is contingent upon successfully completing the DMHAS Recovery Assistant training and providing proof of a physical exam and negative PPD results .
