Job Description

Position Summary:
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Supervising Mental Health Specialist for the Acute Inpatient Units within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care. The primary purpose of the Supervising Mental Health Specialist is to participate as a member of a treatment team in providing patient care and services to adolescent patients and or children (ages 4 years - 21 years). Collaborates with the clinical and administrative leadership of the program offering comprehensive mental health care to patients and their families. Primarily responsible for providing patient care, leadership, training, and supervision to MHS II's, MHS III's and MHS IV's, Activity Assistants II's, Activity Assistants III's and Activity Assistants IV's. Among the key duties of this position are the following: Participates effectively in personnel matters relating to Mental Health Specialists/Activity Assistants according to Unit standards. Coordinates functions of Specialists in Unit according to established policies and procedures. Interacts with patients in a therapeutic manner according to their developmental level. Provides appropriate management interventions in an effective and therapeutic manner. Observes patients' interpersonal behavior indicating knowledge of behavioral norms of each adolescent's developmental level and participation and interest in their environment in accordance with established policies. Plans and implements appropriate therapeutic activity groups. Provides guidance/ direction to staff and others regarding policies and procedures and regarding patient management skills and practices as indicated by coworkers' reports.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant mental health, social, or human services field plus one (1) year of full-time related experience (part-time and/or per diem experience may be substituted for the full-time equivalent). Equivalent education, experience, and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirement.

Employee must be physically active and be on feet most of the day. Duties may involve running and playing active games with children and adolescents (ages 4 years - 17 years). Following training, employee must be physically capable of safely providing personal and 4-point restraint to agitated children.
Work Environment:
Crowded and moderately noisy conditions with children, adolescents, and staff moving about.
