Independent Support Staff for High Skilled and Verbal Adult with
Autism Summary of Position:
Provide quality support services and perform a variety of in home, community and/or vocationally based direct care duties to support an individual with autism in achieving his valued outcomes and to promote his dignity, safety, health and well-being. This individual is currently living independently and participates in an internship daily. He is seeking evening support in his home and/or the community. This position will be under the consultation of the
ELIJA TPS
Program which operates a unique and innovative support model.
Consulting Agency Description :
ELIJA's transition program and services (TPS) is aimed at designing unique customized programming based on an individual's valued outcomes. We consult with a diversity of individuals with autism including those in local colleges, competitive employment, and in self-directed programs. We also provide vocational consultation in the areas of workplace behavior, such as appropriate communication and navigating the social environment at work. ELIJA is committed to developing a field of competent independent support staff to support adults with autism through education, training and research. ELIJA is assisting families in the recruitment and retention of independent support staff. An attractive component of ELIJAa is that candidates have access to intensive supervised experiences to meet the requirements for certification in behavior analysis and licensure in NY State.
Hiring Requirements:
  • Minimum 2-3 years experience working with children and/or adults with autism.
  • Valid driver's license with no violations and reliable vehicle.
  • Must be physically active and willing to engage in various light exercises.
  • Flexibility with work hours and location, but generally 5pm to 9pm multiple weekdays and/or 10am-2pm on weekends. Preferred Requirements
  • Bachelors degree in Special Education, Education, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Psychology or related field of study.
  • Pursuing higher education and/or certification and a license in behavior analysis.
  • Experience with Applied Behavior Analysis Administrative Responsibilities
  • Model appropriate professional behavior and leadership.
  • Work a varied schedule based on the individual's need.
  • Create and implement the daily schedule.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment and be sensitive of the consumer's and family's needs.
  • Follow established policies and procedures set by the family. Keep accurate records, ensure compliance with all trainings and employment requirements. Physical Demands
  • Must have the physical ability to stand frequently during the day.
  • Must be able to safely support, pivot, physically move or assist a person during Activities of Daily Living, with or without assistance.
  • Must be able to physically ensure the safety of all individuals in the program by safely participating in established behavioral interventions. Learner-related Responsibilities
  • Monitor and ensure the individual's safety, health, and welfare.
  • Maintain the highest standard of conduct and courtesy in dealing with individuals, family, staff, and the community. Promote positive interactions.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional and treatment programs and annual goals.
  • Review data books weekly and report unfavorable trends to supervisor and associate executive director.
  • Participate in clinical and programmatic changes for learners.
  • Assist the individual by: Supporting Social Interactions. Providing support with meal prep. Encouraging community engagement Encouraging appropriate use of free time
  • Verbally communicate in a polite, courteous and professional manner at all times.
  • Communicate with parent daily.
  • Opportunities to engage in professional development (e.g., conferences, presentations and/or research).
  • Perform other responsibilities reasonably requested by the family.
