In-person What Does it Take to Become a Peer Support Specialist? You must complete the Peer Support Training offered by the State of Ohio and pass the certification exam. To qualify for training, you must be in recovery from an addiction to alcohol or other drugs. As a Peer Support Specialist, you may work with clients in a variety of settings including:
- Correctional Facilities
- Provide peer support to individuals preparing for re-entry; assist with recovery planning and linkages to post-release services.
- Recovery Housing
- Support clients in building sober routines and accessing resources for employment, health, and daily living.
- Specialty Courts (e.g., Drug or Mental Health Court)
- Help participants meet court requirements, attend court and treatment appointments, and stay engaged in recovery.
- Outpatient Programs
- Work alongside clinical teams to reinforce treatment goals and provide peer-led recovery support.
Essential Functions:
Engage individuals in recovery through outreach and ongoing support, including those who may be hard to reach or hesitant to seek help. Build trusted relationships by listening empathetically and offering consistent, compassionate peer support. Support client-directed recovery planning by helping clients transition from professional treatment to individualized wellness plans. Provide recovery education and coaching , including information on stages of recovery, coping strategies, and navigating daily challenges. Connect clients to critical resources such as recovery housing, employment, healthcare, support groups, and 12-step programs. Collaborate with treatment providers to reinforce clinical services and encourage sustained recovery through one-on-one, and group support.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent (required) Peer Support Certification (required within 3 months of hire) Valid Ohio driver's license and acceptable driving record Ability to work a flexible schedule , including some evenings and weekends Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse client population Our comprehensive benefits package includes: Major Medical plan health insurance options with prescription coverage Voluntary Dental & Vision insurance
