Position Overview:
The SafeHouse Shelter Monitor plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, stability, and trauma-informed atmosphere of the emergency domestic violence shelter. These positions provides overnight, evening, and weekend coverage and is responsible for monitoring shelter activity, supporting clients in crisis, maintaining cleanliness, and responding to hotline calls. Shelter Monitors help maintain a structured and supportive environment for survivors of domestic violence and are often the first point of contact for new arrivals and emergency intakes.
Key Responsibilities:
Client Support & Safety Monitor the shelter environment to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of all residents. Provide emotional support, guidance, and crisis de-escalation as needed using trauma-informed practices. Conduct room and wellness checks while maintaining appropriate boundaries and confidentiality. Communicate client concerns or safety issues to the Program Manager in a timely and professional manner. Hotline & Intake Services Answer the 24-hour domestic violence hotline, providing crisis support, information, and referrals. Complete hotline assessments and determine eligibility for shelter placement in accordance with intake protocols. Conduct emergency or after-hours client intakes, including safety planning and reviewing shelter expectations. Shelter Maintenance & Cleanliness Assist with general shelter upkeep, including cleaning duties, laundry, and common area sanitation. Prepare shelter rooms ("room flips") for new clients by cleaning, changing linens, and restocking supplies. Monitor cleanliness and organization of shared spaces. Documentation & Reporting Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of hotline calls, intakes, incidents, client interactions, cleaning duties, and shift notes. Complete shift reports and communicate updates to other staff to ensure continuity of care. Document safety concerns, policy violations, or behavioral incidents according to protocol. Team Collaboration Work closely with Case Managers and the Program Manager to support client services and shelter operations. Attend trainings and staff meetings as scheduled to stay current on policies, trauma-informed care practices, and program procedures. Support volunteers or donors present at the shelter during shift hours when needed.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework in social work, psychology, or a related field preferred. Experience working in a shelter, crisis center, or residential facility is highly desirable. Commitment to serving survivors of domestic violence with empathy, patience, and professionalism. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially in high-stress or crisis situations. Ability to maintain confidentiality, clear boundaries, and a calm demeanor. Basic computer skills and ability to complete accurate written documentation.
Preferred Skills:
Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Kurdish) preferred. Familiarity with trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, or domestic violence support services. CPR/First Aid or de-escalation training a plus.
Work Environment & Schedule:
In-person position within a secure shelter environment. Evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts required based on scheduling needs. Physical tasks required (e.g., lifting laundry, moving furniture to clean underneath, cleaning rooms, organizing supplies). May encounter high-stress situations involving emotional or behavioral crises
