JOB SUMMARY
The primary role of the Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) is providing direct services to female or male clients suffering from mental illness. The Behavioral Health Technician provides supervision of the clients; ensuring their participating in treatment-related services, facilitating psych-educational activities of daily living, and attending community support and recreational activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Proof of High School diploma or GED equivalent highly preferred.
  • Minimum of two years experience working with behavioral health populations.
  • Must be available to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and flexible hours.
  • Must have criminal background clearance.
  • Must have a TB test, CPR/First Aid certification, valid drivers license, and health screening.
  • If there is a body of water on the grounds, at least one water safety-certified employee is required to be on the premises.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Principles of nutrition, food preparation and storage, and menu planning.
  • Housekeeping and sanitation principles.
  • Provision of client care and supervision, including communication.
  • Provides assistance with prescribed medications that are self-administered.
  • Recognition of early signs of illness and the need for professional assistance.
  • Availability of community services and resources.
  • Familiar with Universal Precautions.
  • Assists in the supervision of client activities and is always aware of clients' whereabouts, including breaks and internal activities.
  • Attends all mandatory training and in-house conferences/seminars.
  • Engages clients in therapeutic activities as appropriate.
  • Provides a brief overview of the housing program regarding program rules, procedures, and services, with each new client.
  • Maintains order and ensures compliance with rules and regulations; ensures that clients conduct themselves in an orderly manner.
  • Monitors and documents clients for signs of medical distress and/or behavioral concerns on an ongoing basis
  • Ensures client wake-up and bedtime, escort residents on shopping trips, recreation, medical appointments, etc.
  • Always enforces program rules.
  • Distributes daily mail to clients and observes confidentiality standards.
  • Records accurate and up-to-date reports on every client and continually updates the bed list(s) to ensure that all admissions and discharges are recorded in a timely fashion.
  • Reports to the supervisor of any discrepancies in the client's whereabouts.
  • Responds appropriately to all medical and other emergencies.
  • When assigned to drive Company vehicles, BHTs are responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of vehicles.
  • Searches all client bags when admitted to the facility. Confiscates and secures any contraband found and notifies the appropriate supervisor on duty in their absence.
  • Randomly inspect all rooms, common areas, hallways, and bathrooms every thirty minutes and perform a thorough search of contraband, no less than weekly.
  • Must always remain awake while on shift.

The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers and handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
