EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master of Science degree from an ACME accredited Nurse-Midwifery program
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS
Required:
  • BLS
  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Licensed APRN Nurse Midwife by the Texas Board of Nursing
  • Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) from the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB)
JOB DESCRIPTION
Scope/Function:
The Certified Nurse-Midwife provides medical care and treatment to obstetrical patients under the supervision of an obstetrician/gynecologist during pregnancy and normal delivery and instructs patients in proper prenatal and postnatal practices and infant care.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provides professional care for patients with obstetric and gynecologic needs. Assists patients in labor, delivery and postpartum care. Ensures safety and health of mother and child and identifies need for additional care. Provides care to obstetrical and gynecological patients in accordance with nurse midwifery protocols.
  • Takes part in initial examination of patient, monitors course of pregnancy, advises on proper health practices and administers tests as appropriate, reports complications to the obstetrician.
  • Attends and reassures patient throughout the course of labor, monitors the fetus and administers medications as necessary. Notifies physician of prolonged labor or complications indicating need for possible surgical intervention.
  • Perform low-intervention techniques to induce labor or relieve pain during labor. Monitor fetal growth, maternal health and treats health conditions that arise during pregnancy.
  • Conducts classes for patients and family members concerning pregnancy, delivery, and proper childcare. Prepares patients and their partners for delivery; trains mothers-to-be in exercise, breathing, and relaxation techniques.
  • Provides advice on family planning and performs gynecological services.
Occasionally coordinates postpartum actions, breastfeeding care, and gynecological care.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
  • Ability to remain calm during labor and delivery to reassure patient
  • Ability to exercise good professional judgment.
  • Good verbal and written skills for communication with patients and physicians.
  • Sufficient vision and hearing ability (with or without assistance) to effectively monitor patients.
  • Sufficient physical strength to assist during labor and deliveries.
