Mental Health Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Job Description SUMMARY Psychiatric Mental Health Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (PMH-APRNs) offer primary care services to the psychiatric-mental health population. PMH-APRNs assess, diagnose, and treat individuals and families with psychiatric disorders or the potential for such disorders using their full scope of therapeutic skills, including the prescription of medication and administration of psychotherapy.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Diagnose and treat common acute psychiatric problems, illness, and crises Psychopharmacologic management in collaboration with psychiatrist Provide individual, group, and family psychotherapy Care for and counsel clients with common identified chronic psychiatric conditions Coordinate and integrate multidisciplinary services for clients with complex psychiatric problems Monitor common health care problems and refer for specialized medical treatment as needed Provide comprehensive family psychiatric-mental health education Work with clients and their families in anticipation of developmental milestones, life cycle events Perform or recommend age-appropriate screening procedures Promote wellness-oriented self-care Advocate for family psychiatric-mental health clients and their families
SKILLS AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
The Professional Role Uses scientific theories and research to implement the nurse practitioner role Prioritizes, coordinates, and meets multiple needs and requests of culturally diverse patients. Recognized the importance of participating in professional organizations Maintains current knowledge about the role of the nurse practitioner in case management and is fiscally responsible with resources Incorporates professional/ legal standards into practice Seeks consultation when appropriate to enhance one's own practice Shows respect for the inherent dignity of every human being, whatever their age, gender, religion, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, and ethnicity Maintain continuing competency Manages the phases of the nurse practitioner- patient relationship Applies therapeutic communication strategies based on theories and research evidence to reduce emotions distress, facilitate cognitive and behavioral change, and foster personal growth Monitors own emotional and behavioral responses to others and uses this self-awareness to enhance the therapeutic relationship Identified and maintains professional boundaries to preserve the integrity of the therapeutic process Monitor relevant research to improve quality care
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education :
Master's degree in psychiatric or mental health nursing from an accredited college or university
License Required:
Possession of a current valid unrestricted license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse issued by the State of Nevada, Board of Nursing; Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or Mental Health Nurse Practitioner; sit and pass the ANCC national certification exam and maintain licensure and certification while practicing. Ability to be credentialed with Medicaid and Medicare is a must! Must carry and maintain individual malpractice insurance.
