JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), has operational and functional responsibility for a group of patient care areas and/or special projects or initiatives. The ACNO supervises and directs care activities according to the policies and procedures of MMHS in order to assure the highest quality of patient care. This includes responsibility for environment, staff, materials and equipment used within the departments providing care to patients. Analyzes and evaluates care provided and implements effective orientation, ongoing education and competency validation for new and tenured personnel. Has 24-hour responsibility for areas of oversight. May assume accountability for all areas assigned to the CNO in his/her absence.
PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS 1.
Leadership & Professionalism a. Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of hospital-wide policies and procedures and serves as a resource person for staff under supervision to ensure the conduct of business in conformance with them. b. Maintains current department policies and procedures, communicates pertinent changes the appropriate personnel hospital-wide, and ensures the departmental staff complies with hospital standards. c. Maintains compliance with Title 22, OSHA, and Life Safety Code standards and regulations as well all other regulatory agencies governing the activities of the department. Stays current with Joint Commission requirements, standards and ensures compliance with all activities within the department. d. Supports the organization mission and goals. e. Leads improvement activities through all phases of development, implementation and evaluation. 2. Managerial Responsibilities a. Demonstrates the ability to lead, direct, organize, control, manage, and assume all responsibility for the operations of the department(s). Manages all operations of each assigned department. b. Sets goals, priorities, staffing levels, and expectations, in alignment with organizational goals and objectives, in each assigned department. c. Supervises the orientation, ongoing education, training and competency validation of employees in each department. d. Provides opportunities for employee growth through participating in mutual goal setting, performance evaluation and ongoing feedback regarding job performance and growth at intervals defined by the organization. e. Ensures effective communication within the department for dissemination of hospital goals and objectives, to elicit feedback on work processes, provides a forum for problem resolution to maintain team motivation, and to foster a positive attitude of all personnel. f. Maintains accountability of all staff under supervision for effective and productive use of time and optimal utilization of skills and resources. g. Participates in MMHS's safety program to improve safety for staff and patients. h. Effectively delegates projects, work assignments, and tasks to staff providing a clear explanation of the desired results, available resources, and accountability as work progress for the duration of the project. i. Provides Performance Improvement leadership within the department by assessing work processes, facilitating team-oriented solutions to identified issues, implementing changes and evaluating the results. j. Maintains regular communication with the CNO through written and verbal reports that provide an overview of progress toward goals. k. Provides the CNO with thoughtful analysis of identified problems within or involving the department and recommends viable, cost-effective solutions for implementation. o. Attends required meetings and is an active and effective team member. p. Participates in management team activities including strategic planning, budget process and specific initiatives to support the hospital's mission. q. Develops and implements a system for soliciting feedback from a cross section of the internal and external customers of each assigned department and reports the results to senior management as required. r. Performs other duties as assigned. 3. Human Resource Management Responsibilities a. Interviews and selects employees.
  • Establishes realistic recruitment criteria and utilizes these in the selection process.
  • Prepares position descriptions and performance standards before posting positions.
  • Utilizes employment references as a portion of the employment process and documents to the employment record.
  • Performs interviews in a professional manner and in accordance with "guest relations: principles. b. Provides employee performance evaluations as required. c. Provides mentorship and/or progressive discipline to support the organization's standards of performance and conduct. 4. Self-Development Responsibilities a. Assumes responsibility for professional self-development.
  • Uses agreed upon managerial and personal goals as basis of annual self-development actions.
  • Attends relevant seminars and educational programs. Remains informed and current on major aspects of management skills through literature, workshops, seminars, courses and conferences with other professionals.
  • Maintains eligibility for appropriate professional certification and credentials.
  • Demonstrates ability to present self in a professional manner and, when requested, assists in community service or outreach programs as required.
  • Represents the hospital at various external meetings with local or state associations or representatives.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Although each position has its own unique duties and responsibilities, the following expectations apply to all positions at the Hospital. Attends department and other meetings as required. Complies with MMHS confidentiality, safety, infection control, and exposure control policies. Complies with all policies and procedures as outlined in the adopted Policy and Procedures manual. Wears I.D. badge. Has completed mandatory safety and security education including annual fire/safety and hazardous materials review. Complies with annual physical examination as required. Customer Service Complies with the MMHS's twelve customer service standards. Establishes and maintains a cooperative relationship with patients, staff and other individuals. Listens to and respects the ideas, feelings and opinions of others. Demonstrates effective communication skills by conveying necessary information accurately, listening effectively and asking pertinent questions when clarification is needed. Assists patients with courtesy regardless of age, gender, nationality and disability without prejudice or bias. Teamwork Demonstrates good judgment in handling situations not covered by written or verbal instructions. Adapts to changes or unusual circumstances in a way that promotes cooperation and minimizes disruption in working environment. Follows written and verbal instructions of supervisor. Interacts with fellow employees in a way that promotes harmonious and cooperative working environment. Recognizes and resolves problems; troubleshoots malfunctions in procedures and uses alternative methods if available. Coordinates efforts of work effectively with others in a way that is productive. Coordinates efforts of effective work activities that contribute to MMHS mission and goals.

An essential function required by all employees is strict adherence to MMHS polices as described in the employee handbook including, but not limited to that regarding attendance and punctuality. Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Required Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or higher
  • Required Two academic degrees
  • Required At least one degree must be in Nursing (BSN or MSN)
  • Required Master's degree in nursing or a related discipline (e.g., MBA, MHA, or another healthcare-related field)
  • Preferred Work Experience:
    Minimum Four (4) years multiple department management experience in acute care facility and/or Critical Access Hospital
Preferred Skills Requirements:
Knowledge of management principles emphasis in clinical setting.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:

English Physical Demands:
