Job Description
General Duties and Responsibilities These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned. Review the operating room schedule and patient chart to obtain as much patient information as possible. Check doctor's preference card and assist in keeping preference card current. Assist in collecting the necessary and anticipated instruments, supplies, and equipment for each procedure. Ensure all necessary medications are available and ready for use. Communicate effectively with peers, physicians, ancillary staff, and the Nursing Administration. Assure that appropriate, effective inter/intra-shift communications are maintained. Connect, test, and perform safety checks on all electrical surgical equipment and monitors prior to patients entering the surgical suite. Any malfunctions are reported to the appropriate person. Develop skills of caring behaviors and caring presence in formal and informal relationships with individuals and groups. Document thoroughly and accurately all observations concerning patients and record them in a timely manner. Maintain adequate supplies and equipment, assuring the OR is properly prepared prior to each case. Identify specific problems and approaches that are individualized for each patient. Position patients safely using proper body mechanics. Check assignments no more than five (5) minutes after the beginning of the shift and prepare for cases, patients, and/or assigned duties immediately. Prioritize and organize work to achieve maximum efficiency. Demonstrate the ability to work efficiently with high productivity and complete assignments within departmental time restraints. Assist in turnover of the OR in preparation for the next assigned case and close down the OR at the end of the shift. Properly document and care for all surgical pathology and laboratory specimens. Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services. Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care. Promptly report problems and concerns to the Charge Person. Complete laser training and maintain competency to safely operate laser machines when assigned. Complete all other duties as assigned. Demonstrate adherence to safety policies and procedures and assist coworkers in compliance. Demonstrate adherence to Human Resources, Departmental, and Organizational policies and procedures and remain up to date on changes. Adapt well to changes in the work environment. Ensure work performed is professional, accurate, and thorough. Demonstrate adaptability, dependability, and accountability for completion of all assigned tasks. Sterile Technique and Surgical Support Responsibilities Identify and utilize principles of sterile technique in each operative procedure. Always demonstrate an appropriate surgical conscience. Assist with preparing items for sterilization according to hospital policies/procedures and manufacturer recommendations. Apply knowledge of normal and pathological anatomy and physiology to the surgical plan. Identify and make available surgical instruments by type, function, and name. Apply appropriate methods of care and handling of surgical instruments. Identify and prepare appropriate suture materials and stapling devices for planned procedures. Identify and select appropriate accessory equipment for specific surgical procedures. Demonstrate proper care, handling, and assembly of specialty items required for procedures. Select appropriate draping supplies and utilize appropriate draping techniques. Identify and report conditions that may have a negative impact on the health, safety, and well-being of patients and personnel. Follow principles of correct hand scrub. Gown and glove self and others proficiently. Pass correct instrumentation, supplies, and sutures while demonstrating dexterity. Properly label medications on the sterile field. Maintain the highest standards of sterile technique throughout procedures. Follow established count policies and initiate reporting when counts are incorrect. Demonstrate organization and accuracy in work performance. Patient-Centered Care and Cultural Competence Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span and provides age-appropriate care. Interprets patient data to identify age-specific needs. Addresses and supports cultural practices when such practices do not harm others or interfere with the planned course of medical therapy. Education, Training, and Staff Support Assist in the orientation of new employees. Attend and participate in departmental staff meetings. Ensure individual skills remain current through required educational programs. Ensure technical staff demonstrate correct use and handling of surgical instrumentation. Quality, Safety, and Compliance Maintain a safe environment through adherence to safety principles. Assist the OR Team Coordinator with specialty areas. Monitor daily temperature and humidity levels in the OR. Comply with infection control guidelines. Assist in identifying patient-related issues for quality review. Monitor established quality indicators for compliance. Assist in meeting OR quality metrics (e.g., First Case On-Time Starts, OR Turnovers). Assist with value analysis committee packets and coordinating specialty in-services. Additional Responsibilities Accept responsibility for other duties as required, including but not limited to: Stocking supplies Preparing supplies and equipment for storage Performing daily housekeeping functions Completing daily assignments as directed Comply with work rules related to meals, breaks, attendance, and on-call responsibilities. Meet project deadlines appropriately. Follow the FOCUSED Standards of Behavior. Customer Service Expectations Treat all customers with dignity, respect, and a welcoming attitude. Display appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication. Anticipate customer needs and respond proactively. Maintain confidentiality of patient and staff information. BSN Experience:
Minimum of three (3) years recent experience in surgical care Applicant must hold a current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the Commonwealth of Virginia or a compact state and maintain BLS certification. CNOR is preferred but not required.
