Community Birth Assistant

About Us Maple & Moon Midwifery is a dedicated home birth midwifery practice based in Bunker Hill, WV. We provide deeply personalized, holistic, and safe evidence-based care to families throughout their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journeys. We believe in honoring the natural process of birth while maintaining a high standard of clinical safety. We are expanding our team and looking for compassionate, grounded, and skilled Birth Assistants to support our midwives and families during the sacred space of labor and birth. As a Birth Assistant at Maple & Moon Midwifery, you will work closely alongside the primary midwife to provide excellent clinical and emotional support during home births. This is an on-call position that requires flexibility, quick critical thinking, and a calming presence. You will be an essential second pair of trained hands, ensuring the safety and comfort of both the person giving birth and the newborn.

Responsibilities Clinical Support:

Assist the primary midwife with clinical tasks during labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period (e.g., monitoring maternal vitals, assisting with charting, and preparing clinical supplies).

Emergency Readiness:

Maintain readiness to assist the midwife in emergency situations, including neonatal resuscitation (NRP) and maternal stabilization.

Labor Support:

Provide emotional, physical, and comfort support to the laboring client as needed, working in harmony with the midwife and doulas.

Postpartum & Newborn Care:

Assist with immediate postpartum assessment of the client, newborn exam, and supporting early breastfeeding/bonding.

Setup & Clean-Up:

Help set up the birth space with necessary equipment and ensure the home is left clean, orderly, and respectful after the birth.

Qualifications & Requirements Location & Availability:

Must live within a 2-hour driving radius of our Bunker Hill office located at 10009 Winchester Avenue, Bunker Hill, WV, 25413 .

On-Call Commitment:

Must be reliably available for an on-call schedule (including nights, weekends, and holidays) and have reliable transportation to travel to home births within our service area.

Certifications:

Current NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) and BLS/CPR certifications are highly preferred (or a willingness to obtain them prior to starting).

Experience:

Prior experience in birth work (as a doula, birth assistant, nursing student, or labor & delivery nurse) is preferred, but we are willing to train the right candidate who aligns with our philosophy.
