Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College are responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field. He/she will be responsible for quality instruction and for effective participation and interest in the total affairs of the college. This individual will provide laboratory and clinical instruction for students in the Surgical Technology program. Responsibilities include supporting hands-on learning, supervising students in laboratory and clinical settings, assessing student competency and professional behavior, maintaining accurate student records, promoting a safe learning environment, and ensuring compliance with program, clinical site, and college requirements. This adjunct position serves in a part time capacity with primary responsibility for laboratory and clinical instruction and requires availability on Thursdays and Fridays for clinical assignments. Duties/Functions Teaching Teaching (Laboratory and Clinical Instruction) Provide hands on instruction in laboratory and clinical settings. Supervise students during laboratory practice and clinical rotations. Demonstrate and reinforce surgical skills, aseptic technique, and safe practice. Evaluate student competency, technical performance, and professional behavior. Provide timely feedback to support student learning and skill development. Utilize appropriate teaching strategies to support a variety of learning styles. Maintain current knowledge and practices within the surgical technology field. Clinical and Laboratory Oversight Ensure a safe and effective learning environment in lab and clinical settings. Monitor student compliance with program policies, clinical site requirements, and safety standards. Support proper use and care of equipment and supplies in the laboratory. Communicate with program leadership regarding student progress, concerns, or incidents. Professional Development Maintain a professional status that supports the instructional mission by: Participating in professional development activities to maintain current knowledge and competency in the surgical technology field Maintaining current credentials or licensure as required by the program or accreditation standards Participating in professional development opportunities to enhance instructional and clinical teaching skills. Administration Provide oversight of laboratory, clinical activities, and student records to include: Maintaining a safe, organized, and effective laboratory learning environment, including upkeep of assigned equipment and supplies Supporting safe practices and compliance with clinical site policies and requirements Maintaining student records (e.g., clinical evaluations, skills assessments, attendance) in accordance with established deadlines using college-approved systems (e.g., Canvas and other required platforms) Complying with all applicable college, program, clinical agency, state, and federal rules and regulations Student Support Provide an environment conducive to student success to include: Addressing student concerns in a timely and professional manner Promoting student success and accountability in laboratory and clinical settings Assisting students in developing technical skills, clinical judgment, and professional behavior Referring students to appropriate program, campus, or community resources when needed Demonstrate and model the College's employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor. Difficult Challenges Contacts Education Required Graduate with an AAS in surgical technology program accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accreditation agency Current certification in surgical technology through a national certification program accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA) (e.g., CST) • Education Preferred Bachelor's degree in a healthcare related field Experience Required By the time of hire, two (2) years of experience in the operating room scrub role, as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, obtained within the five (5) years immediately preceding the faculty member's start date Demonstrated knowledge of surgical technology principles, procedures, and clinical practices Experience Preferred Experience teaching in an accredited surgical technology program Experience supervising students in laboratory and clinical settings Experience using Canvas or other technology based instructional platforms • Ability to effectively instruct, supervise, and evaluate students in laboratory and clinical settings KSA Required The Instructor shall possess an understanding of and commitment to the nature and role of the Community College, particularly its "open door" policy. He/she shall have demonstrated personal and professional competence for the responsibilities assigned. The Instructor must be able to: Multi-task effectively in fast-paced laboratory and clinical learning environments Respect and support a diverse student population Adapt to changing procedures, protocols, schedules, and assignments Create and maintain a learner-centered environment that promotes student success Communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and clinical personnel Effectively implement and apply technology solutions related to instruction, communication, documentation, and student records Instruct, supervise, and assess student performance in laboratory and clinical settings Model professional behavior, accountability, and ethical conduct Exercise sound judgment and maintain safe practices in laboratory and clinical environments Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in accordance with college, program, and clinical site expectations KSA Preferred Ability to provide effective feedback and coaching to support student growth and development Ability to build positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and clinical site personnel Familiarity with clinical evaluation processes and competency-based instruction Ability to support student learning through a variety of instructional strategies in laboratory and clinical settings. Department/Job Specific Requirements Must maintain current certification in surgical technology as required by program and accreditation standards Must be available at a minimum on Thursdays and Fridays to support scheduled clinical instruction Must be able to provide instruction and supervision in laboratory and clinical settings Must be able to assess student competency, professional behavior, and clinical progress in a timely manner The following (compliance) training is required and must be completed within the first 30 days of hire with annual refresher training thereafter: (additional training may be added as needed) Reporting Requirements Anti-Discrimination/Harassment & Title IX Safety/Shooter on Campus Personal Information Protection Training (PIP) Ethics and Social Responsibility eLearning Level One in Canvas before the first day of the first semester teaching eLearning Level Two in Canvas for instructors who teach online or hybrid delivery methods before the first day of the first semester teaching in that format Physical Demands Criminal history checks with acceptable results, are required. May include teaching day and evening and/or weekend hours Physical Requirements a. Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods of time in laboratory and clinical environments b. Ability to lift, carry, push, and or pull equipment and supplies typically used in surgical technology settings c. Ability to demonstrate and assist with positioning, movement, and transfer of equipment or simulated patients as required in laboratory instruction d. Manual dexterity sufficient to demonstrate surgical skills and handle instruments and equipment e. Visual and auditory ability to assess student performance, monitor the environment, and respond to safety needs f.
