Summary:
Mesalands Community College is seeking a full-time Instructor of Nursing. Mesalands Community College is currently hiring for a Full Time Associates Degree (ADN) Nursing Instructor. Nursing instructors are responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities. The instructor facilitates learning, creates a learning environment, and evaluates progression of learning for ADN nursing students. The instructor must engage in effective, professional communication with students, faculty members, staff, and administrators. Nursing faculty are expected to engage in continual professional development, remain current with best practices in nursing education, and participate in ongoing activities to improve the quality of the nursing program. This position is expected to work in a multi-cultural, diverse working environment. The Nursing Instructor must be deeply committed to the growth and success of all students but with special interest in serving Hispanic, rural, and distance learning students. The Nursing Instructors are accountable for the following duties: Provide didactic, lab, and clinical learning experiences Develop and maintain an environment conducive to the teaching/learning process Teach all classes according to the approved course syllabus using the assigned schedule Ensure each course/class contains content appropriate to the ADN and reflects best practices in nursing education and practice Teach one or more subjects within prescribed curriculum using a variety of teaching methodologies to facilitate and engage students in the learning process Facilitate student application of theoretical knowledge to clinical settings Post and maintain office hours for student consultation Inform students about course requirements and other policies Communicate with students in a timely manner Keep students informed about academic progress through prompt grading of assignments and completion of evaluations Maintain timely and accurate student records, including attendance records and grades Participate in the evaluation of student progress and retention Identify student problem areas/clinical areas of concern to the Director of Nursing Participate in committee, task force, faculty meetings, and other activities as assigned Participate in program, curriculum, and course review activities Recommend textbooks and other instructional materials to the Director of Nursing Act as a liaison between the college and community clinical agencies Communicate effectively with clinical agency representatives, staff, faculty, and students Maintain knowledge about college and department policies and procedures Demonstrate knowledge of the college and department student learning outcomes, curriculum model, and clinical expectations Remain current with contemporary trends and development in area of expertise and in approaches to nursing education Demonstrate knowledge of safe nursing care, problem-solving skills, effective use of resources, collaboration with other health professionals, and the maintenance of professional standards Perform other duties as may be required and commensurate with job description.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
The successful candidate must meet the following criteria: Be a nurse currently licensed or have privileges to practice as a nurse in the State of New Mexico. Have been actively employed in nursing for the past 3 years or have advanced preparation in nursing, nursing education, and/or nursing administration. Have had three years of varied nursing experience since graduation Demonstrates evidence of teaching abilities in the subject area of teaching responsibility including current knowledge, clinical expertise and safety.
Educational Requirements:
Nursing faculty who teach full-time shall hold a graduate degree in nursing from a regionally-accredited institution Faculty without a graduate degree may be employed for one year and then are required to complete a graduate degree within the next five years Nursing faculty who teach part-time shall hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree in nursing; faculty without a Bachelor of Science in Nursing BSN may be employed for one year and then are required to complete a BSN completion program or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program within five years Part time faculty without a graduate degree in nursing shall report to a master's prepared faculty and evidence of routine supervision shall be documented. Part-time faculty shall be oriented to the curriculum, and provided with instruction in didactic and clinical teaching strategies. Clinical preceptors are licensed as a nurse at or above the educational level for which the student is preparing. Must have a valid driver's license Must have an acceptable driving record

Ability to evaluate, design, and implement curriculum, testing, and/or teaching methodologies. Ability to make procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Knowledge of teaching methods, curriculum, and education programs. Knowledge of Concept Based Teaching Methods highly desired but not required. Teaching and facilitation skills. Ability to teach and control the behavior of students. Knowledge of academic education curricula. Knowledge of and ability to apply relevant current education methodologies and techniques. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
Language skills:
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills a must. Ability to read and interpret texts related to the discipline; documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions; and procedure manuals. Ability to write required reports and correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information to individuals and groups of students and others from within Mesalands Community College and out in the community.
Mathematical skills:
Ability to perform basic mathematical functions.
Reasoning ability:
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
Technology skills:
Computer Competency; Capable of applying and maneuvering within various software packages including but not limited to Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Internet.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is required to walk, stand, sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, and controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, and lift; and talk and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, depending on the discipline area.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/classroom work environment. May be required to instruct in a clinical setting. Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds. Must be able to stand or walk for entire class periods (approx. 4.5 hours at one time). May be required to travel to different sites according to class assignment.
