Nursing - Part-time Clinical/Practicum Faculty

This job description is to identify specific functions and responsibilities. It is to be used in conjunction with the role responsibilities delineated in the Northern faculty handbook.

SUMMARY:

Teaching and evaluating students in practicums. This function is implemented through collaboration with team members and other faculty on assigned campus and at all Northern campuses.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

• Actively participate as a team member in planning and coordinating team activities.
• Plan, implement, and evaluate effective teaching methods in the practicum/clinical.
• Participate in evaluation and revision of curriculum as needed.
• Maintain constructive relationships with personnel of practicum agencies utilized for student practicum experiences.
• Participate with team members in evaluation of student performance based on description of grade calculation as stated in the syllabus.
• Assist in maintaining student and course records.
• Use the learning management system (LMS) for posting assignments, feedback, and grade reports, in addition to communication about any classes missed due to weather or other unplanned absence.
• Maintain membership in professional organizations.
• Participate in continuing education, workshops, seminars and/or academic study.
• Support and foster a positive relationship with other nursing faculty members and students to create an effective learning environment.
• Support the philosophy, policies, goals and conceptual framework of the college and division.
• Maintain open communication with team leader and/or chair regarding team, student, and curriculum concerns.
• Maintain clinical competency and keep abreast of up-to-date nursing practices.
• Work in a collegial manner with staff, peers, chair, public, and students.
• Seek and develop clinical experience and clinical sites as needed.
• Facilitate success of students which may involve remediation.
• Be available to assist students for individual practice and mastery of skills.
• Integrate technology and simulation into teaching.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

1. Hold a valid license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Oklahoma.2. Have a minimum of two years current full-time equivalent practice as a registered nurse in a clinical setting.3. Have a baccalaureate degree and preferably a master's degree in nursing. The faculty with a baccalaureate degree shall obtain a master's degree within five years of starting the master's program.4. Part-time faculty have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in nursing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Nursing Faculty must possess the following abilities: 1. Sufficient acuity (seeing ability), such as the ability to accurately prepare and administer medications, observations necessary for client assessment and nursing care, such as observing color and appearance of skin and wounds.2. Sufficient auditory (hearing) perception to receive verbal communication from students, co-workers, and clinical institutional members. Also, to assess health needs of people through the use of monitoring devices such as stethoscopes, IV infusion pumps, cardiac monitors, fire alarms, telephones, etc.3. Sufficient gross and fine motor coordination to respond promptly and to implement the skills required in meeting client health care needs safely and holistically while in a clinical setting with students. These include, but are not limited to, manipulation of equipment, management of multiple tubes and drains, and performance of CPR and palpation of body structures and organs. The ability to sit, walk, and stand for periods pf time is required. Lifting of occasionally 50 pounds, frequent lifting of 25 pounds, and constantly lifting of 10 pounds is required.4. Sufficient communication and language skills (speech, comprehension, reading, writing) to interact with students, coworkers and clinical institutions. The ability to communicate effectively in English, as may be necessary for clients' interest and safety. Must be able to obtain information, describe client situations and perceive nonverbal communication.5. Sufficient intellectual functions and emotional stability to plan and implement safe care for clients and to promote effective communication with students/coworkers/clients/families/health care team while in the clinical or office setting. Needs to have the flexibility to function effectively under stress and deal with others who may be experiencing stress.6. Sufficient olfactory (smelling) abilities to detect presence of odor or smoke. The individual will need to notify the nursing division in writing if such a disability occurs during employment.
