Category Schools - Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Type Contract Empower students across all grade levels to achieve greater independence and confidence by providing specialized orientation and mobility services within a welcoming, supportive school community. This contract role involves working directly with Pre-K through high school students who are visually impaired, offering both instructional and consultative support district-wide. As an Orientation and Mobility Specialist, you'll play a vital part in enhancing student access to their environments, supporting safety, and fostering critical daily living skills.
Key Qualifications:
Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility or related field National certification through
ACVREP K-12
teaching certification Experience providing orientation and mobility training to visually impaired or blind learners Familiarity with OM guidelines and best practices (referenced OM Guidelines linked above) Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with educators, families, and administrators Commitment to empowering students to reach their highest level of independence
Primary Responsibilities:
Deliver direct instruction and consultative services tailored to each student's needs Develop, implement, and monitor individualized plans promoting student safety and independence Teach pre-cane and cane skills, route travel, community travel, and daily living techniques Conduct staff training and family support sessions for consistent reinforcement of mobility strategies Serve as a knowledgeable resource on assistive techniques and accessibility within school and community settings Maintain compliance with district and state policies while documenting student progress This part-time, onsite opportunity offers flexibility with 2-3 days of work each month, totaling 20-25 hours per week, across multiple school sites.
