An Occupational Therapist helps patients with injuries, illnesses, and disabilities recover, improve, or develop skills needed for everyday activities. Assists people with mobility impairments to move easily around their homes; develops school and workplace settings that are accessible for individuals with physical or mental disabilities. May specialize in certain types of impairments or certain categories of patients.
This position requires the OT to be licensed and registered. The OT must complete training to become a Certified Driving Instructor then proceed to sit for the Certified Driving Rehab Specialists exam after one year of training. The OT's responsibilities include evaluation of consumer's driving ability; training with/without adaptive equipment; report writing; staff education; in-services to referral sources; attendance at continuing education events and vehicle maintenance as needed. The OT will be responsible to supervise the COTA on staff. You will be responsible for their training, performance, reports and review of each client they provide services to.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
To include but not limited to: Driver evaluations (visual, cognitive, and physical evaluation tools used road assessment in company vehicle) Older drivers (normal aging process) Older drivers with new medical diagnoses (CVA, vision changes, dementia, etc.) Any drivers with new medical diagnoses (TBI, MS, etc.) New drivers to determine if driving is an appropriate goal (Aspergers, etc.) Drivers with physical disabilities to determine appropriate equipment needs (amputation, SCI, etc.) Driver training lessons for the following: New drivers with cognitive disabilities (CP, ADHD, Aspergers, etc.) New drivers with physical disabilities requiring adaptive equipment (Spina Bifida, CP, etc.) Current drivers with new driving needs [equipment or training only] (TBI, amputation, etc.) Community Mobility Training Perform community mobility needs assessment in former driver's home Perform community mobility training with clients (bus, taxi, errand services, etc.) Provide follow-up to ensure success in community access Documentation of evaluations and training Comply with facility documentation procedures Utilize company email system Proficiency in Microsoft Word Utilize fax machine Vehicle Maintenance, etc. Gas vehicle Keep vehicle clean and free of trash Know all the road rules and set an example by following them Communication Client and family interviews and counseling Writing a client report thoroughly after evaluations Writing a client summary note after trainings Communication to referral sources Staff education Notify company president of any vehicle or client problems Provide guidance to other staff when sharing client trainings Participate in marketing events Transferring patients as needed Installing/un-installing adaptive equipment in company vehicles Route planning for lessons Arrive on time for work and each appointment
MINIMUM SKILLS REQUIRED
Occupational Therapist Master's Degree Current OT License Current Liability Insurance Current Driver's License and a clean driving record for the last 3 years Pass a FBI fingerprint check as required by the Department of Education 2+ years experience in Occupational Therapy. 2+ years working with the general public. Outstanding communication skills. Time Management skills a must. Proficient on all Microsoft and Google applications. Able to fax and do mailings as needed.
