Category Schools - Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Type Contract Bring your expertise as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist to a rewarding contract opportunity supporting K-12 students. This vital role empowers visually impaired students, ensuring they can navigate their environments with confidence and independence by teaching essential orientation and mobility skills. You'll collaborate with educators, families, and other professionals to craft individualized instruction plans that address each student's unique needs and goals. Your work will directly influence positive student outcomes and help foster greater independence. What you'll need to succeed: Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) Experience working with children or young adults in educational settings Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with teachers, families, and support staff Ability to conduct assessments and develop instructional goals tailored to each student Commitment to creating supportive, inclusive learning environments Flexibility and adaptability to work with students across a range of ages and abilities Main responsibilities: Assess students' orientation and mobility needs and recommend appropriate strategies Develop and implement individualized instruction plans focused on building safe, practical navigation skills Provide direct instruction in cane use, route planning, environmental awareness, and public transportation Collaborate with IEP teams, participate in meetings, and document progress toward goals Consult with staff and parents to promote generalization of skills across settings Stay current with best practices in orientation and mobility techniques and assistive technologies This contract position offers flexibility, the opportunity to make a lasting difference in students' lives, and the chance to work alongside a dedicated education team.
