Job Description

The Center for the Visually Impaired (CVI) empowers individuals with vision loss to live independently and thrive through vision rehabilitation, low vision, orientation and mobility, assistive technology, and support services. CVI is seeking a full-time Vision Rehabilitation & Orientation and Mobility Specialist to provide rehabilitation and mobility services to children and adults who are blind or visually impaired. Qualified candidates must hold certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) and have an additional specialty as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI), Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (CVRT/VRT), Occupational Therapist (OTR/L), or Physical Therapist (PT). Services are provided in CVI's clinic, as well as in clients' homes, schools, workplaces, and community settings, and may include orientation and mobility instruction, vision rehabilitation training, low vision rehabilitation, assistive technology instruction, and independent living skills training. Key Responsibilities Orientation & Mobility Services Conduct orientation and mobility evaluations and develop individualized service plans. Provide instruction in white cane skills, street crossings, public transportation, community navigation, route planning, and environmental awareness. Support clients in developing safe, efficient, and independent travel skills. Vision Rehabilitation Services Assess functional abilities and rehabilitation needs. Provide instruction in activities of daily living, independent living skills, adaptive techniques, and compensatory strategies for vision loss. Deliver low vision rehabilitation training, device instruction, and recommendations for adaptive equipment and environmental modifications. Support educational access, balance and mobility, fall prevention, and environmental safety based on professional specialty and client needs. Assistive Technology Instruction Train clients in the use of smartphones, tablets, accessibility features, screen readers, magnification, and other assistive technology solutions. Reinforce recommendations from low vision evaluations to promote independence and accessibility. Collaboration & Documentation Collaborate with providers, educators, caregivers, and community partners to support client goals. Maintain timely and accurate documentation in accordance with agency, payer, and regulatory requirements. Participate in interdisciplinary care planning, program development, outreach, and educational activities. Qualifications Required Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) through ACVREP. Current certification, licensure, or eligibility as either a: Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (CVRT/VRT) Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) Physical Therapist (PT) Bachelor's degree or higher in a related field. Experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Ability to travel independently throughout the community with reliable transportation. Strong communication, organizational, and documentation skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teams, and electronic documentation systems. Preferred Experience serving pediatric and adult populations. Experience in low vision rehabilitation and/or assistive technology instruction. Experience working in interdisciplinary rehabilitation settings. Bilingual (Spanish/English). Benefits Competitive salary commensurate with credentials and experience.
