Job Summary Our goal at Nix Eye Care & Surgery is to be the premier Ophthalmology practice in the area by providing each patient with exceptional, personalized care. The Ophthalmic Technician position is a ground-floor opportunity to develop a streamlined, patient-centered operation and help lay the foundation for the practice's future success. This employee will play a critical role in helping to establish efficient workflows, optimizing the electronic medical record (EMR) system, and help in building a high-performance team.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care & Clinical Testing:

Obtain and document accurate patient medical and ocular histories. Perform visual acuity, intraocular pressure, pupil, and confrontation visual field and motility testing. Perform auto-refraction, lensometry, keratometry, and other standard ophthalmic testing. Prepare patients for comprehensive eye examinations and assist physicians as needed. Perform and assist with diagnostic testing, including OCT, fundus photography, visual fields, pachymetry, and other ophthalmic imaging as trained. Administer ophthalmic drops and medications according to physician orders and practice protocols. Assist with minor in-office procedures and other clinical activities as directed. Accurately enter and update patient information in the electronic medical record (EMR).

Physician Support:

Prepare examination rooms and equipment for patient visits. Communicate pertinent patient findings and test results to the ophthalmologist. Assist physicians with examinations and procedures. Maintain appropriate clinical workflow and help ensure patients are seen efficiently. Recognize and promptly communicate abnormal or urgent findings to the physician or appropriate clinical staff.

Patient Experience :

Provide courteous, professional, and compassionate patient care. Explain testing procedures to patients and answer routine questions regarding their examinations. Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and practice policies. Help patients feel comfortable and informed throughout their visit.

Clinical & Administrative Responsibilities:

Maintain clean, organized, and properly stocked examination rooms. Clean, disinfect, and maintain ophthalmic equipment according to established protocols. Ensure testing equipment functions properly and report problems promptly. Follow infection-control, safety, and quality-assurance procedures. Assist with telephone calls, referrals, medical records, and other clinical administrative duties as needed. Greet patients, check in for appointments, schedule clinic visits and surgeries. Participate in ongoing training and maintain competency in ophthalmic testing and equipment. Assist with payment processing, insurance verification, billing and insurance claims.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous experience as an ophthalmic technician, ophthalmic assistant, medical assistant, or in a related clinical role preferred. COA, COT, or COMT certification is preferred but not required. Knowledge of basic ophthalmic terminology, anatomy, and diagnostic testing. Experience with an ophthalmology EMR is a plus. Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately document clinical information. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a physician-led clinical team. Ability to multitask and maintain accuracy in a busy outpatient environment. Professional, dependable, and patient-focused demeanor.

Preferred Experience:

Experience with the following is a plus: OCT and OCT-A Humphrey visual field testing Fundus photography A-scans/B-scans IOL calculations Topography Refraction Minor ophthalmic procedures Pre- and post-operative patient care

Hours:

8:00 am - 5:00 M-F Occasional earlier/later shifts as needed for procedures or urgent patient care
