Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine as an Ophthalmic Technician with our Ophthalmology clinic in DCAM

This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science provides medical and surgical treatment of eye diseases. The department members' interests include cataract surgery with lens implantation, transplantation including corneal diseases plus refractive surgery, vitreo-retinal surgery, and medical diseases of the retina including special treatment of diabetic retinopathy and age-related retinal degenerations, eye plastic surgery, strabismus surgery, and neuro-ophthalmology. At UChicago Medicine , we offer comprehensive eye care services, including screenings and treatments for common eye conditions like cataracts and glaucoma, as well as glasses prescriptions. Our expert Ophthalmology and Visual Science team is dedicated to providing advanced medical and surgical solutions for a wide range of ocular disorders affecting patients of all ages, from infants to adults. Under the direction of the Eye Center manager, assists the attending and resident physicians in the exam and care of the Eye Center patients.
Essential Job Functions:
Under the direction and order of the physician: Takes patient medical, past medical, family and medication histories. Records patient ocular history. Measures and records visual acuities and intraocular pressures. Evaluates the pupil, estimates the anterior chamber depth and examines the eyes for afferent papillary defect. Administers eye drops, dressings and shields. Assists physician in surgical procedures. Instructs the patient on post-operative care and documents accordingly. Exhibits basic knowledge and understanding of ocular motility, visual fields, contact lenses (basic principles and fitting procedures), and ocular pharmacology. Performs color vision, lensometry, exophthalmetry, Amsler Grid and Schirmer testing. Maintains instruments, equipment and a clean and/or sterile environment. Maintains supply inventory and orders accordingly. Prepares clinic for routine readiness review. Performs other duties assigned.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalency. Successful completion of an accredited program for Ophthalmic Technicians. One year of satisfactory, work experience under ophthalmological supervision. Certified by the Joint Commission on Allied Health personnel in Ophthalmology or equivalent. CPR certification. Considerable skills in communicating verbally, in handling public contact with discretion, tact and courtesy, and in determining priorities, organizing work, working independently and in making decisions. Ability to ascertain whether a situation is urgent, emergent or routine.

Non-Union In this role, we anticipate that you will generally work approximately 40 hours per week. We anticipate that you will generally be scheduled to work the evening shift, between the hours of 7:00 am
  • 7:00 pm and will not be scheduled for on-call shifts. We anticipate you will be scheduled to work 100% at the DCAM Clinic. The days of the week that you are scheduled will be Monday
  • Friday, but we anticipate that you will not be scheduled to work on weekends.
