HIPAA Certified Ophthalmic Technician Full Job Description General Summary of Duties :

Gathers important medical information; performs visual screening and diagnostic prior to Ophthalmologist's visit with patient; as well as some clerical duties. Also assists doctor in the room by entering information in the EHR system during patient visit, sending prescriptions to pharmacy, and other general help for the doctor.

Requires prolonged standing, walking, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires excellent communication skills and a keen understanding of patients with sensory impairment. Must be able to express a caring attitude while performing the tasks required with accuracy and efficiency. Requires normal range of hearing and eye sight to perform necessary testing and reporting of findings.

Duties:

Greets patients and introduces self prior to eye exam Provide prompt, courteous and professional service Learn and maintain excellent customer service Answers patients questions or finds answers for them Inputs data into EHR system during doctor exam Sends prescriptions to pharmacy at doctors request Completes a detailed patient history which includes: past medical history(systemic and ocular), family medical history(systemic and ocular), medication history(systemic and ocular), and the chief complaint(reason for the visit) Checks patient's uncorrected(when applicable) and corrected visual acuity for distance(Snellen) and near(Jaeger) Documents condition of glasses as well as reading them through lensometry Performs auto refraction as needed Performs one or more of the following exams: Ishihara Color Vision, Stereo, W4D, Amsler, Confrontational Visual Fields(CVF), Extra Ocular Movements(EOMs), and Titmus stereo testing Performs subjective refraction: cross cylinder technique as applicable Performs iCare tonometry or applanation on patient Performs angle assessment and pupil assessment prior to dilating patient Performs corneal Pachymetry Performs corneal topography accurately and is able to troubleshoot poor readings or machine difficulties Is able to accurately perform two or more of the following

VF's:

HVF, Goldmann, Tangent Performs OCT(nerve fiber layer) photography Knowledge of routinely used in office surgical instruments, such as Vannas scissors, Jeweler's forceps, punctual dilators, and lid specula Is able to insert and remove both a soft and hard contact lens Is able to instruct patient on insertion and removal techniques for contact lenses Performs eye patching as instructed by MD Is able to perform first aid in the office Accurately measures blood pressure and pulse rates. Is familiar with O2 tank and how to administer under MD instructions Responsible for care, maintenance, cleaning, and stocking of assigned rooms Attend required staff and educational meetings as requested Maintains strictest confidentiality Performs other duties as assigned by owners or supervisors Abides by the policies and procedures of the clinic as outlined in the Personnel manual

OSHA/Handwashing Performance Requirements :

Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the eye. Understands both the theory and the workings behind specific testing. Knowledge of systemic diseases and their impact on the eyes. Knowledge of the ocular diseases of the assigned specialty. Knowledge of HIPAA. Excellent communication skills. Willingness to be TEAM oriented and cheerfully help wherever assigned.

Education/Experience:

Completion of

AAO/JCAHPO

Home Study Course Certified Ophthalmic Assistant(COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician(COT), or Certified Medical Technologist(COMT) Alternate of Certified Ophthalmic Scribe(OSC) as allowed
