Position Summary We are seeking a skilled, compassionate, and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Technician to join our busy multidisciplinary medical practice. The Ophthalmic Technician will work closely with ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other healthcare professionals to provide high-quality patient care. This role involves performing diagnostic testing, obtaining patient histories, assisting with examinations and procedures, and ensuring efficient patient flow throughout the clinic. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Patient Care Greet and prepare patients for examination in a professional and courteous manner. Obtain and document patient medical and ocular histories, medications, allergies, and chief complaints. Measure and record visual acuity, pupil responses, intraocular pressure, and other clinical data. Perform preliminary eye testing and diagnostic procedures according to established protocols. Educate patients regarding testing procedures, treatments, and follow-up instructions. Clinical Testing and Diagnostic Procedures Conduct ophthalmic diagnostic testing, including: Visual field testing Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Fundus photography Corneal topography Lensometry Auto-refraction Keratometry Pachymetry Prepare patients for specialized procedures and examinations. Assist physicians during examinations, treatments, and minor office procedures. Administer ophthalmic drops and medications as permitted by state regulations and practice policies. Documentation and EMR Management Accurately document patient information, test results, and physician findings in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. Ensure all patient records are complete and up to date. Maintain confidentiality of patient information in compliance with HIPAA regulations. Equipment and Clinical Support Maintain, clean, calibrate, and troubleshoot ophthalmic equipment. Ensure examination rooms and equipment are properly stocked and prepared. Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering clinical supplies. Follow infection control and patient safety protocols. Team Collaboration Work collaboratively with ophthalmologists, optometrists, medical assistants, front office staff, and other healthcare team members. Assist with patient flow to ensure efficient clinic operations. Support quality improvement initiatives and departmental goals. QualificationsRequired Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. Minimum of 1 year of ophthalmology or eye care experience preferred. Knowledge of ophthalmic terminology and testing procedures. Ability to accurately perform diagnostic testing and clinical measurements. Strong computer and data-entry skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), or equivalent certification preferred. Experience with EMR/EHR systems. Knowledge of ophthalmic medications and eye diseases. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong understanding of ophthalmic procedures and diagnostic equipment. Excellent attention to detail and clinical accuracy. Ability to multitask in a fast-paced medical environment. Strong patient-service orientation and professionalism. Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations. Effective communication and teamwork skills. Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, bend, and walk for extended periods. Frequent use of computers, diagnostic equipment, and medical instruments. Ability to assist patients with mobility needs when necessary. Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
