The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in optical sciences, medical terminology, and retail management, with a passion for education and professional growth. As an Optician Trainer, you will play a vital role in enhancing team performance, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, and promoting best practices within the optical and medical environments. This position offers an exciting opportunity to influence the quality of patient care and customer service through targeted training initiatives. Here's what the role typically includes: Training & Development An optical trainer teaches new hires and existing staff how to: Understand basic eye anatomy and vision concepts (related to Optometry) Interpret prescriptions from eye doctors Fit and adjust eyeglasses properly Use optical equipment (lensometers, pupilometers, etc.) Follow company policies and sales procedures They may create training materials, run workshops, or provide one-on-one coaching. Product Knowledge They ensure staff understand: Different types of lenses (single vision, progressive, etc.) Lens coatings (anti-reflective, blue light filtering) Frame styles, materials, and brands This helps employees recommend the right products to customers. Sales & Customer Service Training Optical trainers often coach employees on: Communicating clearly with customers about their vision needs Recommending appropriate eyewear solutions Handling objections and closing sales Providing a positive customer experience Compliance & Accuracy They make sure staff follow regulations and standards, including: Verifying prescriptions correctly Maintaining patient/customer confidentiality Following Coaching culture Performance Monitoring Observe staff performance on the floor Provide feedback and retraining if needed Track progress and identify skill gaps Collaboration Work with store managers, opticians, and sometimes eye doctors Help roll out new products or procedures Support onboarding for new locations or teams Education High school diploma or GED is usually the minimum Many employers prefer: Associate or bachelor's degree (business, healthcare, or a field related to Optometry) Formal optical training programs can be a plus Optical Experience This is the most important requirement: 2-5+ years working in an optical setting (retail optical, clinic, or lab) Strong understanding of: Eyeglass prescriptions Lens types and coatings Frame fitting and adjustments Optical equipment (like lensometers) Certifications (often preferred or required) Licensed optician (depending on your state) Certification from organizations like the American Board of Opticianry (ABO) Contact lens certification (NCLE) can be a bonus Training & Communication Skills Experience training, coaching, or mentoring employees Ability to explain technical information in simple terms Public speaking or presentation skills Strong interpersonal and customer service skills Sales Knowledge Background in retail sales or optical sales Ability to teach: Product recommendations Upselling techniques Customer engagement strategies Organizational & Leadership Skills Ability to create training plans or materials Time management and multitasking Leadership qualities (even if not a manager role) Tech Skills Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) or optical software Basic computer skills (presentations, training modules, etc.) Optional but Valuable Experience opening new stores or onboarding teams Bilingual communication skills Travel flexibility (some trainer roles cover multiple locations)Pay:
