This positions is a full-time Director of Optometry, assigned to the Acute Care and Specialties Service Line loced the Central Alabama VA Medical Center. This position may be resided either of our main campuses loced in Montgomery, AL and Tuskegee, AL or outlying CBOCs loced Fort Benning, AL, Columbus, GA, and Fort Rucker, AL. The primary purpose of this position is to provide supervision over Optometry staff and services to include administrive and management functions. Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus):

Function or Scope of Assigned Duties:
  • Full program responsibility for the Optometry service and provide supervision to subordines.
  • Performs other directly reled duties as assigned, including management of community care referrals as needed.
  • Provides clinical supervision to student interns when applicable.
  • Eye examinions in regularly scheduled clinics provide diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic eye care to pients of all ages, taking into considerion age-reled and cultural differences of the various veteran populions served.
  • Address Visual functions to include reduced visual acuity, impaired contrast sensitivity function, impaired central and/or peripheral vision, eye movement dysfunction, loss of depth perception and combinions of these.
  • Consistently communices and tres customers (Veterans, their representives, ors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.
  • Provides the customer with consistent informion according to established policies and procedures.
  • Participe actively in performance improvement and tend assigned meetings or process action teams. Work collaborively with other specialties.
  • Follow VA directives and polices and maintains current in BLS.
  • Possess computer skills to access and input typed da on each pient into the computerized pient record system (CPRS).
  • Provides direct clinical supervision of health technicians and other staff as approprie.
  • Supports the TECS (Technology-based Eye Care Services) program.
  • Establishes professional working relionships with other clinical service providers within the medical center and outlying clinics, provide telephone and e-consult consultions as needed.
  • Coopere with and participe in medical duties or functions reled to quality of care, peer review and with other performance improvement activities as directed.
  • Provides prescribed medical trement and personal care services to veterans in need of Optometry services.
  • Documents observions, assessments, and changes in pient's condition; collaboring with health team members to facilite positive pient care outcomes.
  • Attend mandory training, such as VA Voices, Own the Moment, comply with CME requirements in the specialty of Optometry, and must complete the required TMS courses timely.
  • Must be aware and compliant of VA SAIL metrics and VA Performance Measures.

Basic Requirements:
United Stes Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of Doctor of Optometry resulting from a course of educion in optometry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools or colleges approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA) for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are United Stes and Canadian schools or colleges of optometry listed as accredited by the Accredition Council on Optometric Educion (ACOE), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed. Optometrists must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice optometry, and maintain a current registrion in a ste, territory, or Commonwealth of the United Stes, or in the District of Columbia th requires successful passage of all parts of Nional Board of Examiners in Optometry intended for basic licensure. The Optometrist must maintain current registrion in the ste of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Residency Training:
Optometrists must have successfully completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of VA in an accredited post-gradue training program, or have comparable experience, as described below: (1) Approved residencies are those with accredited or within pre-accredited stus by the ACOE, in the list published for the year the residency was completed. OR (2) Two years of licensed clinical optometric practice in the United Stes consisting of active involvement in the management of medically complex pients.
NOTE:
The Approving Official may approve, under unusual circumstances, a waiver of residency or comparable experience. Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience:
Post-gradue residency program preferred with ability to tre glaucoma and common ocular conditions/diseases and Supervisory experience.

This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing; clear, distinctive speech; and manual dexterity.
