Job Description
UPMC is seeking a compassionate Peer Specialist I to provide recovery-focused support to individuals facing mental health or substance use challenges. Drawing on your own lived experience, you will offer hope, practical guidance, and advocacy to help patients set goals, build skills, and navigate services. In collaboration with an interdisciplinary clinical team, you will provide one-on-one and group support, link patients to community resources, and document care. Responsibilities Provide peer support to patients using lived experience with recovery or behavioral health challenges Assist patients in setting recovery goals and developing self-advocacy and coping skills Facilitate one-on-one and group peer support sessions in coordination with clinical teams Support patient transition and continuity of care across hospital, outpatient, and community settings Document interactions and progress in accordance with UPMC and regulatory standards Collaborate with nurses, social workers, and other providers to support patient-centered care plans Educate patients and families on recovery resources, community supports, and wellness strategies Promote hope, empowerment, and engagement while maintaining healthy boundaries and confidentiality Participate in ongoing training, supervision, and quality improvement initiatives Uphold UPMC values of integrity, diversity, and mission-driven, patient-focused care Required Skills Peer support techniques Motivational interviewing basics Crisis de-escalation skills Behavioral health and recovery knowledge Documentation and EMR basics Group facilitation Communication and active listening Boundary setting and ethics in peer roles Community resource navigation Basic computer proficiency
