Job Description

Provides patient observation and customer service to the patients, family members and visitors at Pikeville Medical Center.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Has reputation for sound judgment. Notifies nurse when feel that patient safety may be jeopardized. 2. Continuously observes patient and surroundings for compromises in patient safety. Does not leave patient unobserved and always maintains direct eyesight. Notifies appropriate personnel if there is a need to leave the room 3. Notifies nurse about events where patient safety may be compromised, e.g., patient trying to get out of bed. 4. Communicates effectively with co-workers, patients, family members, and/or hospital staff; conducts self in a professional manner, using accountability in communication to resolve problems in an open and timely manner. 5. Participates in hand-off of pertinent information/behavior about assigned patients at the start and upon completion of shift assignment. 6. Accompanies patient off the unit for clinical tests or procedures and continues to observe patient for safety. 7. Keeps room clean and free of clutter. Removes items in room that may be deemed a risk to patient safety. 8. Maintains bed in low position, alarm on. 9. Utilizes side rails as patient safety when condition warrants. 10. Provides patient with call bell that is in reach. 11. Refrains from personal phone usage while providing observation to patient. 12. Adheres to medical center policy

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE
A high school diploma or equivalency is preferred. CPI training within 6 months of hire.

CONDITIONS
May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases. Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours. There is a potential for being at risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals when working. Information regarding hazards and protective measures along with training on handling and storage of hazardous materials will be provided prior to initial assignment to work with hazardous chemicals, whenever the hazard changes, and on an annual basis.
