ABOUT BRIGHTSIDE BARBELL
Brightside Barbell is an independent, locally-owned strength and conditioning gym based in Oakland, CA. We offer a variety of group strength and conditioning classes for adults including functional fitness, bodybuilding, weightlifting, and powerlifting. We strive to create a welcoming space for beginners and seasoned athletes alike.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Functional Fitness Coaches at Brightside Barbell coach groups and individuals in a wide range of techniques intended to help develop broad all-around personal fitness. Strength and Conditioning coaches must demonstrate excellent coaching, leadership, and managerial skills to effectively deliver all-levels group fitness classes. Coaches must be self-motivated team players with the ability to communicate with a variety of personality types to help athletes reach their goals. We are seeking coaches capable of leading a variety of classes including functional fitness, bodybuilding, weightlifting, and powerlifting.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead group fitness classes ranging from 2-18 athletes of varying abilities. Read and understand workout programming designed by the head coach prior to each shift Prepare an effective warm up and select drills and progressions to help athletes prepare for the Workout of the Day Explain the Workout of the Day to the athletes, including the intended stimulus and appropriate ways to modify or scale the workout if needed, while still maintaining the intended stimulus Physically demonstrate the movements programmed for the Workout of the Day, as well as any applicable scales or modifications, using proper form and technique. This includes (but is not limited to) the ability to demonstrate beginning and intermediate gymnastic movements as well as squat, press, & hinging movements both unloaded and with barbells, kettlebells, and dumbbells. While the ability to perform advanced gymnastics movements (e.g. bar muscle ups, handstand pushups, etc.) is not required, candidates must be able to demonstrate professional knowledge of the execution and performance standards of advanced gymnastics sufficient to coach all levels of athletes. Provide cues and feedback to athletes both individually and in a group setting to support proper movement mechanics, range of motion, and load/intensity selection Manage time effectively, ensuring sufficient time is allotted for each portion of the class and that class starts and ends on time Explain and enforce policies and rules, especially those designed to support safety and injury prevention Effectively communicate with a wide range of experience levels and personalities; Field questions and feedback from athletes and provide guidance that is appropriate for their experience level and temperament Maintain a positive, encouraging, and upbeat demeanor Ensure the facility is well-maintained and that equipment is stored properly Effectively teach new athletes how to safely perform barbell lifts (squats, presses, deadlifts, snatches, clean & jerks) as well as other compound and gymnastics movements (e.g. pulls ups, push ups, thrusters) via 1:1 sessions and small group sessions using "Brightside Fundamentals" programming provided by Brightside Barbell. (As schedule permits) Promote all internal programs, events, and special offers. In the rare event that class is empty, coaches are expected to perform light janitorial duties for the duration of their scheduled shift. Attend coaches meetings. Adhere to all Brightside Barbell policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1+ years of functional fitness or Olympic Weightlifting training experience as an athlete 1+ years experience as a coach teaching functional fitness, weightlifting, or bodybuilding group classes to adults A strong personal desire to continue consistent and regular strength & conditioning training, either in group classes or as an independent athlete. CF-L1 (or comparable) certification. Preference will be given for additional qualifications such as CrossFit Level 2, USAW Certification, CSCS certification, or other advanced certifications. Current CPR/First Aid/AED Certification. Coaches MUST stay current with a minimum of a CrossFit Level 1 (or comparable certificate) and CPR/First Aid/AED certification in order to continue coaching group fitness classes. Ability to adapt coaching strategies and instructions to accommodate a wide variety of athlete abilities and personalities. Ability to connect with athletes and build community. Ability to motivate others and implement new ideas. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to be on time to all meetings and events and 5 minutes early to all classes coaching. Adept at adjusting to people's moods and personalities. Must have the emotional stamina to be "at your best" with each group of clients. Ability to handle multiple tasks at once.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associate, Bachelors, or Masters degree in a related field
EMPLOYMENT STATUS
This is a part-time, nonexempt position. Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa.
SCHEDULE
This is a part-time position. We are seeking candidates capable of committing to at least 2 hours per week and not more than 10 hours per week. Each class is approximately 1 hour.
Shifts available include:
6am & 7am M-F Noon M-F 5pm & 6pm M
  • Th 4pm & 5pm F 9am Sunday
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Pay range is $30
