Job Description
Position Summary The Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for leading safe, effective, and engaging group fitness classes that support the YMCA's mission of building healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. Instructors create a welcoming and inclusive environment while motivating participants of all fitness levels to achieve their wellness goals. Essential Functions Plan and lead high-quality group exercise classes in accordance with YMCA standards and class formats. Demonstrate proper exercise techniques and provide modifications to accommodate varying fitness levels and abilities. Foster a positive, supportive, and inclusive atmosphere that encourages participation and member engagement. Arrive prepared and on time for scheduled classes and secure substitute coverage when unable to teach. Maintain current knowledge of industry trends and best practices in group fitness instruction. Monitor participants during class to ensure safety and proper form. Build relationships with members, answer questions, and encourage continued participation in YMCA wellness programs. Maintain class attendance records as required. Assist with special events, wellness initiatives, and promotional activities as needed. Uphold YMCA policies, procedures, and the organization's mission and values. Qualifications Current nationally recognized Group Exercise Certification or format-specific certification (e.g., Les Mills, Zumba, Yoga, SilverSneakers, etc.) preferred. Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification required or obtained within a designated timeframe. Previous group exercise instruction experience preferred. Strong communication, interpersonal, and motivational skills. Ability to safely demonstrate exercises and adapt instruction for diverse participant needs. Physical Requirements Ability to actively lead and demonstrate exercises for the duration of the class. Ability to lift, move, and carry equipment as needed. Ability to stand, bend, reach, and perform repetitive movements associated with fitness instruction.
