Full Job Description Per Diem Employment Status:
Per diem employees work on an as-needed basis to support operational and staffing needs. Work schedules and shift availability may vary and are not guaranteed. Per diem employees are not guaranteed a minimum number of hours, shifts, or continued assignments. Employment is at-will and may be terminated by either the employee or Apple Specialty Pharmacy at any time, with or without cause or notice, in accordance with California law. Position Summary The Pharmacist at Apple Specialty Pharmacy is responsible for ensuring the safe, accurate, and compliant dispensing of specialty medications while providing clinical oversight to optimize patient outcomes. This role involves verifying prescriptions, counseling patients, collaborating with healthcare providers, maintaining regulatory compliance, and supporting operational efficiency within the pharmacy. Core Responsibilities 1. Prescription Verification & Dispensing 1.1 Review and verify prescriptions for accuracy, appropriateness, and completeness in compliance with federal and state regulations, payer requirements, and internal protocols. 1.2 Ensure specialty medication prescriptions meet clinical standards regarding dosing, drug interactions, contraindications, and prior authorization requirements. 1.3 Oversee accurate dispensing, labeling, and packaging of medications to promote safe patient use. 2. Clinical Oversight & Patient Safety 2.1 Conduct drug utilization reviews and address clinically significant findings. 2.2 Provide evidence-based clinical recommendations to prescribers to enhance therapeutic outcomes. 2.3 Monitor and address adverse drug reactions, therapy duplications, and medication adherence issues. 3. Compliance & Documentation 3.1 Ensure adherence to state board regulations, DEA guidelines, payer policies, and internal compliance standards. 3.2 Accurately document patient profiles, interventions, and dispensing activities in the pharmacy information system. 3.3 Maintain the confidentiality and integrity of patient health information in compliance with HIPAA regulations. 4. Operational Support 4.1 Assist in daily pharmacy workflow, including order processing, inventory control, and issue resolution. 4.2 Coordinate effectively with technicians, prescribers, and internal departments to ensure timely prescription fulfillment. 4.3 Support quality assurance initiatives, internal audits, and performance improvement measures. 5. Provider & Patient Communication 5.1 Respond to prescriber inquiries and clarify prescription details when necessary. 5.2 Provide patient counseling, primarily via telephone, regarding medication use, administration, storage, side effects, and expected outcomes. 5.3 Collaborate with the provider engagement team to address medication-related barriers affecting patient care and continuity. 6. Inventory & Controlled Substance Management 6.1 Oversee controlled substance handling, storage, and reconciliation in compliance with DEA and internal protocols. 6.2 Monitor specialty medication inventory to prevent shortages, overstock, or waste. 6.3 Assist with procurement and inventory tracking processes. Key Performance Indicators Clinical Accuracy and QA Performance Documentation and EMR Quality SOP/Policy Compliance and Timeliness Operational Efficiency/Cost-Consciousness Team Collaboration and Communication Managerial/Peer Review Qualifications, Education & Licensure Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited institution. Active pharmacist license in good standing with the state board of pharmacy. Current DEA registration, if applicable. Experience Minimum of 1-3 years of pharmacy experience; specialty pharmacy or clinical experience preferred. Experience with prescription processing systems and specialty medication workflows. Skills & Competencies Strong knowledge of pharmacotherapy, drug interactions, and specialty medication requirements. Excellent communication and patient counseling skills. Detail-oriented with the ability to maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment. Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities. Commitment to patient safety, regulatory compliance, and high-quality care. Work Environment and Physical Requirements Primarily office and pharmacy setting.
