Job Title:
We are hiring for Inpatient Pharmacist! Job Description This inpatient pharmacist role oversees all aspects of central drug distribution operations during shift hours in an acute care hospital setting. The pharmacist ensures safe, accurate, and timely medication therapy by managing sterile compounding, oral medication repackaging, and unit dose dispensing through automated systems. The role requires expert Epic order verification, close collaboration with nursing and medical staff, and consistent oversight of pharmacy technicians to support high-quality patient care. Responsibilities Oversee all aspects of central drug distribution operations during assigned shift hours. Perform sterile compounding of IV admixtures and chemotherapy in compliance with regulatory and institutional standards. Repackage oral liquids and manage oral unit dose dispensing using carousel systems. Conduct comprehensive Epic medication order verification to ensure therapeutic appropriateness, accurate dosing, optimal dosage form, and correct route and rate of administration. Identify and address potential drug interactions, allergies, and therapeutic duplications during order verification. Coordinate timely preparation and delivery of medications to nursing units and patient care areas. Provide clear oversight, direction, and support to pharmacy technicians to ensure accurate and efficient workflow. Maintain clear, professional, and timely communication with prescribers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory standards, includingUSP , USP
, and USP . Demonstrate a strong understanding of central pharmacy workflows related to Pyxis systems and patient-specific medication filling processes. Verify medication orders originating from central pharmacy dispensing carousels, storeroom carousels, and cleanroom production areas. Communicate directly and promptly with prescribers or designated practitioners to clarify or correct orders in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Provide evidence-based pharmacotherapy recommendations and drug information to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Document clinical interventions and significant activities in a timely and thorough manner using Epic Ivents. Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives focused on clinical and operational safety. Support inventory management and monitoring of drug therapy as part of daily inpatient pharmacy operations. Adhere to professional phone etiquette and demonstrate strong multitasking skills in a fast-paced environment. Essential Skills Active Registered Pharmacist license in the state of Illinois. Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. Minimum of 1 year of experience in an inpatient or acute care pharmacy setting. Experience with sterile compounding, including IV admixtures and chemotherapy. Demonstrated competency in inpatient pharmacy operations, including inventory management and monitoring drug therapy. Proficiency in Epic medication order verification and documentation workflows. Strong understanding of central pharmacy workflows related to Pyxis systems and patient-specific medication filling. Knowledge of and adherence to USP , , and standards. Ability to identify and resolve issues related to dosing, dosage forms, drug interactions, allergies, and therapeutic duplications. Strong multitasking abilities and organizational skills in a high-volume environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with healthcare professionals. Ability to provide clear direction and oversight to pharmacy technicians. Additional Skills & Qualifications Completion of a PGY1 pharmacy residency is beneficial. Prior experience in an inpatient pharmacy within a hospital environment. Comfort providing evidence-based pharmacotherapy recommendations and drug information. Experience documenting clinical interventions using electronic health record tools such as Epic Ivents. Familiarity with carousel-based dispensing systems and storeroom carousels. Strong attention to detail and commitment to medication safety and quality improvement. Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team. Work Environment This position is based in an inpatient pharmacy within a hospital campus. The pharmacist works primarily day shifts consisting of five 8-hour shifts (approximately 08:00 to 16:30), with the potential to work rotating weekends as needed. The environment includes central pharmacy operations, sterile compounding cleanrooms, and areas equipped with carousel dispensing systems and Pyxis automated dispensing cabinets. Work involves frequent interaction with nursing units and other clinical departments to support timely medication delivery and patient care. The setting is fast-paced and requires adherence to institutional policies, regulatory standards, and professional dress appropriate for a hospital pharmacy environment.
