Job Description Position Summary:
The Veterinary Pharmacist provides clinical expertise and oversight of medication use to support safe, effective pharmacotherapy for veterinary patients across multiple species within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This role collaborates with veterinarians, technicians, residents, and students to optimize drug therapy, including extra-label use and compounded medications when appropriate. The position also ensures compliance with federal and state pharmacy regulations while supporting the hospital's teaching mission through education and clinical consultation. The primary purpose of this role is to ensure safe medication practices and enhance patient care outcomes in a complex academic veterinary hospital environment.Full consideration date:

Review, verify, and dispense medications for veterinary patients across multiple species, ensuring appropriate drug selection, dosing, route of administration, and duration of therapy to support safe and effective pharmacologic treatment within the teaching hospital. Provide clinical pharmacy consultation to veterinarians, residents, interns, technicians, and students by evaluating drug therapy plans, identifying potential drug interactions or adverse effects, and recommending evidence-based pharmacologic alternatives or adjustments. Compound sterile and non-sterile veterinary medications when commercially available products are unavailable or unsuitable, ensuring accurate formulation, stability, labeling, and compliance with USP standards and institutional policies. Ensure compliance with federal and state pharmacy regulations by managing controlled substances, maintaining accurate records, monitoring storage and dispensing practices, and supporting audits and regulatory inspections to safeguard patient safety and institutional compliance. Educate veterinary students, residents, technicians, and clinical staff on medication safety, pharmacology principles, and best practices through formal instruction, case discussions, and experiential training that supports the hospital's academic mission. Collaborate with clinical teams to optimize medication-use systems and pharmacy workflows, contributing expertise to medication safety initiatives, formulary management, and process improvements that enhance patient care and operational efficiency. Perform other related duties as assigned, including supporting pharmacy operations, assisting with policy development, participating in quality improvement initiatives, and contributing to the advancement of pharmacy services within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.Conditions of Employment:

Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety and welfare. Rotating holiday coverage and some weekend shifts required.Supervision:
This position does not have any formal personnel supervision but has functional and professional oversight responsibilities.Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited college or school of pharmacy. Working knowledge of federal and state pharmacy regulations, including controlled substances, record-keeping, and veterinary-specific legal requirements. Ability to independently analyze and resolve complex medication-related problems using clinical judgment and evidence-based resources. Effective communication skills to collaborate with veterinarians, technicians, students, and pharmacy staff in a teaching hospital environment.Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with sterile and non-sterile compounding, including calculation, formulation, stability considerations, and compliance with USP and applicable regulatory standards. Demonstrated knowledge of veterinary pharmacotherapy, including species-specific pharmacokinetics, extra-label drug use, and medication safety in animals. Completion of a veterinary pharmacy residency or equivalent advanced training. Prior experience in a veterinary hospital, academic medical center, or specialty pharmacy setting. Experience teaching or precepting students, residents, or trainees in a clinical environment. Eligibility for or progress toward DICVP certification or similar veterinary pharmacy credentialing. Must be physically able to lift 40 lbs of pet food or fluids Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
