About Northeast Medical Institute Northeast Medical Institute (NEMI) is Connecticut's premier CT Office of Higher Education (OHE) and CT Department of Public Health (DPH) approved medical training institute. With campuses across Connecticut — including East Hartford, Middlebury, Woodbridge, Stamford, and Stafford — NEMI is dedicated to providing high-quality, accessible healthcare training that empowers students to launch rewarding medical careers. Our programs are designed to deliver practical, hands-on education with the support of experienced instructors who are active professionals in their fields. Position Summary The Pharmacy Technician Instructor is a part-time, evening-based position responsible for delivering hands-on laboratory instruction within the Pharmacy Technician Program at Northeast Medical Institute. The instructor will facilitate a structured 3-night lab series covering core competencies including safety and hygiene, prescription interpretation, medication counting and compounding, controlled substance handling, error detection, and hazardous spill response. This position requires a seasoned pharmacy professional who can effectively bridge real-world pharmacy practice with an engaging educational experience. The instructor may be assigned to any of our three Pharmacy Technician lab campus locations — East Hartford, Middlebury, or Woodbridge — based on student enrollment volume and scheduling needs. Flexibility and willingness to travel between campuses is required. Lab Program Overview Each lab series consists of three consecutive evening sessions, each 4 hours in length, with a maximum of 10 students per session. The instructor is responsible for facilitating all activities within the following structure: Night 1
Safety, Hygiene & Rx Interpretation:
Glo Germ infection prevention activity, sig code interpretation exercises, and pharmacy technician prescription entry simulations Night 2Counting, Compounding & Controlled Substances:
Tablet counting relay, perpetual inventory and controlled substance log review, and non-sterile compounding (levigation/spatulation technique) Night 3Error Detection, Hazard Response & Final Skills Challenge:
Medication error basket audits, mock hazardous spill response, Top 300 drug tournament, and a final skills circuit assessment Recurring Activity (All Nights)- Top 300 Brand/Generic drug match-up with a running competitive leaderboard Essential Duties & Responsibilities Plan, prepare, and deliver evening lab instruction following the established 3-night curriculum framework Set up and break down lab stations prior to and following each session, ensuring all supplies are stocked and equipment is functional Facilitate all scheduled activities including simulations, timed exercises, group rotations, and final skills assessments Monitor and evaluate student performance throughout each session; provide timely, constructive feedback Maintain student attendance records and submit required documentation to the program coordinator Adapt instructional methods to accommodate varying student learning needs and paces Reinforce professional standards, pharmacy ethics, and safety compliance during all lab activities Travel to and instruct at East Hartford, Middlebury, and Woodbridge campus locations as assigned based on student volume Communicate proactively with the academic coordinator regarding supply needs, student concerns, or scheduling conflicts Ensure all lab environments meet safety standards, including proper PPE use and hazardous material handling protocols Minimum Qualifications Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Lead Pharmacy Technician in a retail, hospital, or clinical pharmacy setting Active Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) through PTCB or NHA preferred Demonstrated proficiency in prescription processing, compounding, controlled substance handling, and DEA compliance Working knowledge of Top 300 drugs, LASA medications, and high-alert drug protocols Strong classroom management and communication skills; ability to engage and motivate adult learners Prior experience in training, mentoring, or instruction is a plus Ability to work flexible evening hours in accordance with the lab schedule Reliable transportation and willingness to commute between campus locations as needed Proficiency in basic record-keeping and documentation Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods during lab sessions Ability to lift and carry lab supplies and equipment up to 25 lbs Manual dexterity sufficient to demonstrate and supervise hands-on pharmacy lab skills Ability to travel independently between campus locations Work Environment This position is conducted in a laboratory and classroom setting at Northeast Medical Institute.
