POSITION SUMMARY
The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for performing technical functions related to the preparation, compounding, and distribution of intravenous (IV) medications, including chemotherapy and supportive therapies. This role ensures accurate record keeping, inventory control, and compliance with all applicable safety and regulatory guidelines, including USP 797 and USP 800. All tasks are performed under the direct supervision and verification of a registered pharmacist or nurse.
CORE ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare, compound, and dispense IV medications including supportive, non-hazardous, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy agents per physician orders. Verify prescription orders, patient details, EMR documentation, and authorization prior to dispensing. Maintain accurate inventory levels through proper ordering, stocking, and usage of electronic inventory systems. Document and reconcile daily medication dispensing activity, including controlled substance logs and waste tracking. Perform and record weekly physical inventory counts and scheduled hood/terminal cleanings. Support prescription processing and refill coordination for infusion appointments, including clear bag, white bag, and PAP prescriptions. Collaborate with oral chemotherapy technicians to assist with daily operations such as preparation and copay collection. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., USP 797/800, HIPAA) and internal protocols to maintain patient safety and data privacy. Participate in quality assurance activities and uphold attendance, productivity, and conduct standards as required by law and company policy. Completes documentation and tasks as required by the medically integrated dispensing (MID) accreditation body to ensure compliance with regulatory and quality standards.
Requirements:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program preferred. Minimum of 2 years of experience in a pharmacy technician role, with at least 1 year in an oncology or sterile compounding setting preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION
Pharmacy Technician License issued by the Florida Board of Pharmacy required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES
Strong knowledge of sterile and non-sterile compounding techniques, including USP 797 and 800 compliance. Understanding of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and supportive care drug preparation, dosing, and handling requirements. Proficiency in pharmacy inventory systems, medication labeling, and electronic health record (EHR) documentation practices.
