Job Description

Job Description This position works in the retail pharmacy unit of a hospital or clinic facility and is responsible for assisting a Retail Pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical services in accordance with established procedures and methods. The position may be required to work on shifts, including evenings, and weekends and holidays. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Receive prescriptions, medication orders and requisitions for a wide variety of pharmaceuticals. Bring questionable items to the attention of the Pharmacist. 2. Assist the Pharmacist in preparing prescriptions and physician orders through order entry and by measuring and/or counting items, reconstituting and/or mixing items, etc., and packaging items. 3. Insurance adjudication, troubleshooting, and reprocessing. 4. Type the medical label in accordance with the prescription and/or instructions of the Pharmacist. 5. Refer all completed drug orders to the Pharmacist for checking before dispensing. 6. Adhere to safety/infection control policies and procedures. Report unsafe equipment. 7. Maintain a clean, well-stocked, safe environment for patients and staff. 8. Maintain the strictest confidentiality of all facility and facility-related employee information. Other Duties 1. Maintain patient drug profiles; fill floor stock orders for drugs; prepack and repack drugs as unit doses and pre-label packaged drugs. 2. Prepare purchase orders/requisitions; unpack and check all incoming drugs and supplies; remove outdated drugs from stock. 3. Prepare various solutions according to formula as determined by the Pharmacist 4. Distribute and/or deliver completed drug orders to individual patients and/or authorized personnel. 5. Assist Retail Pharmacist in inventory and quality control; prepare statistical data on number of unit doses dispensed, number of patients per day, number of discharged patients. 6. Stock shelves, automated dispensing machines and/or medication stations. 7. Keep the pharmacy clean and in neat working order. 8. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Review of Work:
For each prescription filled, work is reviewed by the Pharmacist to ensure proper filling.
Qualification Requirements:
One (1) year of work experience assisting a licensed pharmacist which required receiving and reading prescription and medication orders from physicians; performing arithmetic computations to determine proper measurements/quantities of pharmaceutical components required; measuring, counting, packaging, and labeling items and arranging them for final professional review. The work experience must have demonstrated a knowledge of commonly used pharmaceutical preparations used in the treatment of illnesses, dosage requirements, dosage forms, storage requirements; experience in receiving and reading requisitions from pharmacists; measuring, counting, packaging, and labeling items; aseptic techniques; routes of drug administration; pharmaceutical nomenclature; pharmaceutical system of weights and measures; procedures and operations relating to aseptic compounding and parenteral admixture operations; arranging medication for final professional review; maintaining accurate inventory records; State and Federal pharmacy regulations; applicable hospital/unit policies and procedures; and the ability to provide pharmaceutical services in accordance with established procedures and methods; measure drug doses accurately; maintain records and prepare reports; and communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Certification may be recommended:
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers.
Physical Requirements:
All employees must be physically able to perform the essential duties of the position. The general types of physical abilities involved, and examples of the tasks requiring these abilities, follows:

      OCCASIONAL
      crawling and climbing, push/pulling, exposure to moving machinery, dust, fumes, operate food pedals with both feet, exposure to changes in temperature and humidity, may drive a vehicle

      Desirable Qualifications:
