Job Description

Pharmacy Technician Position Summary Provides distributive pharmacy services under supervision of pharmacists by delivering quality and cost effective drug therapy to patients. Minimum Qualifications Work Experience Previous pharmacy or healthcare related experience preferred. Education High school graduate or equivalent preferred. Certifications/Licensure National Pharmacy Technician certification required. Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician by the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy within 30 days of hire/placement. Job Specific Performance Standards The duties listed below are a summary of the major essential functions of this position. The position may require other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned, and specific functions may change from time to time. Performs accurate and efficient prescription data entry for review by pharmacist, including selection of proper patient, proper medication, proper strength and quantity, and proper directions for use. Records patient medical histories while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA regulations. Prepares non-sterile extemporaneous compounds and accurately documents compounding. Maintains records of controlled substances in accordance with state and federal regulations. Performs accurate pharmaceutical calculations in the processing of prescription orders. Uses the computer system appropriately for dispensing, returns to stock, and third party adjudication. Properly prepares prescriptions for dispensing to patient, including selection of correct product from pharmacy stock, dispensing of proper quantity, and proper labeling of prescription vial/product. Performs manipulation of inventory for accurate rotation of stock and monitoring of product expiration dates. Identifies and addresses the needs of different patient age groups and effectively communicates with those patients. Delivers quality customer service to patients, responding to inquiries, questions, or requests, and referring them to the pharmacist for medical information. Maintains a neat, clean work environment. Follows safety and infection control policies of the pharmacy and other hospital and department policies and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge and proper use of equipment necessary to perform job function. Assists in the orientation of new personnel and students. Addresses patient questions regarding Over-The-Counter (OTC) therapies, referring to Pharmacist when appropriate. Accurately and efficiently completes customer transactions at the cash register or drive thru window, including the gathering of appropriate prescription orders and collecting payment. Performs timely processing of will-call bin to identify prescriptions for return that have not been picked up by patients, and accurately returns product to pharmacy stock.
