Job Description

Sr. Pharmacy Technician Job Description The Sr. Pharmacy Technician supports pharmacists by performing advanced technical functions and assisting with professional services to ensure safe, accurate, and timely medication delivery to patients, staff, and physicians. Working under the direct supervision of the pharmacist on duty, this role focuses heavily on sterile and non-sterile compounding, medication order processing, inventory control, and mentoring other technicians while maintaining strict compliance with applicable standards and regulations. Responsibilities Prepare parenteral products, including IV solutions, IV piggybacks (IVPBs), and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) solutions in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards. USP 797, USP
800, and USP 795 requirements through completion of ongoing competencies, accurate compounding documentation, and adherence to aseptic technique. Process printed medication orders accurately and efficiently, ensuring timely delivery of medications to support patient care. Fulfill stock medication requests as needed, including assembling and replenishing ambulance trays and code cart trays. Answer telephone calls promptly and provide courteous, accurate information and support to internal and external customers. Respond to customer service window requests, assisting nursing, medical staff, and other departments with medication-related needs. Return medications to appropriate storage areas, ensuring proper organization, labeling, and adherence to storage requirements. Monitor medication par levels, reorder stock as needed, and restock controlled substances in accordance with established procedures and regulatory guidelines. Serve as a resource for fundamental and compounding pharmacy technicians, providing guidance on workflows, procedures, and best practices. Directly participate in the training and onboarding of new pharmacy technicians, supporting their development and competency in pharmacy operations. Perform additional Sr.-level duties or special projects at the request of pharmacy leadership, following completion of required competencies. Maintain accurate records and documentation related to compounding, inventory, and controlled substances to support regulatory compliance and patient safety. Promote a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within the pharmacy by following established protocols and identifying opportunities to enhance processes. Essential Skills Active Wisconsin pharmacy technician license or registration. At least 2 years of pharmacy experience, including sterile compounding experience. Demonstrated pharmacy technician experience, with strong skills in medication preparation, order processing, and inventory handling. Proficiency in sterile compounding techniques and compliance with
USP 797, USP
800, and USP 795 standards. Ability to prepare IV solutions, IVPBs, and TPNs accurately and safely. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in compounding, labeling, and documentation. Effective communication skills to interact professionally with pharmacists, technicians, nursing staff, physicians, and other team members. Ability to train and mentor other pharmacy technicians and serve as a knowledgeable resource. Solid organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Commitment to patient safety, regulatory compliance, and high-quality pharmacy services. Additional Skills & Qualifications Hospital pharmacy experience, including sterile compounding, strongly preferred. Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification strongly preferred at hire. Experience with medication filling, compounding, and prescription preparation in a pharmacy setting. Interest in professional growth and advancement along a defined pharmacy career ladder, such as progressing from Compound Pharmacy Technician to Sterile Compounding Technician, Sr. Pharmacy Technician, and Sterile Products Technician Specialist. Ability to adapt to changing priorities and support additional projects or responsibilities as requested by pharmacy leadership. Work Environment This position is based in a hospital pharmacy environment that supports direct patient care and acute clinical needs. The Sr. Pharmacy Technician works varied shifts, with at least one opening offering 64 hours over a two-week pay period. The role involves working in cleanroom and compounding areas that must meet
USP 797, USP
800, and USP 795 standards, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment and adherence to aseptic technique. Work includes frequent interaction with pharmacists, other pharmacy technicians, nurses, and physicians, as well as telephone and in-person communication at a customer service window. The environment is fast-paced and detail-oriented, requiring consistent focus on safety, accuracy, and regulatory compliance while supporting a collaborative and team-based culture. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Pleasant Prairie, WI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $24.50/hr.
