Job Title:
Phlebotomist Job Description This phlebotomist position focuses primarily on blood collection while also performing specimen processing, data entry, and front-desk support in a busy patient service center environment. The role combines high-volume venipuncture with strong customer service, as you work with patients ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics, including individuals undergoing cancer treatment. You will handle your own orders, specimen splitting, and centrifuging while using the Touch system for data entry and medical record documentation. The position requires flexibility to float between multiple locations in northern and central Orange County and nearby coastal areas. Responsibilities Perform high-volume blood draws, completing approximately 30 to 40 venipuncture procedures per day, with about 70% of your time focused on phlebotomy. Collect specimens from a diverse patient population, including pediatric, adult, geriatric, and cancer patients, ensuring compassionate and professional patient care. Process specimens by centrifuging, splitting, and preparing samples according to established laboratory protocols and quality standards. Enter patient orders and test information accurately into the Touch system and related medical record systems, maintaining precise and timely data entry. Manage your own orders from entry through specimen collection and processing, ensuring proper labeling, handling, and documentation. Provide high-level customer service in a patient service center and walk-in lab setting, addressing patient questions and concerns with professionalism and empathy. Support front desk operations after training, including patient check-in and related administrative tasks as needed. Work effectively in a fast-paced environment that sees approximately 170 to 200 patients daily, maintaining efficiency without compromising quality or safety. Participate in a structured training program, including at least 25 observation collections followed by training on front-desk responsibilities. Float between multiple locations, including the home site in Brea, CA and other assigned sites between Newport Beach and Manhattan Beach, adapting to varying workflows and schedules. Follow all safety, infection control, and quality assurance procedures during specimen collection and processing. Collaborate with colleagues and laboratory staff to ensure smooth operations and timely specimen handling throughout the day. Essential Skills Phlebotomy experience with venipuncture and blood draw skills, including the ability to perform up to 30 to 40 draws per day. Phlebotomy certification, with the ability to perform collections independently after training. Proficiency in specimen handling, including centrifuging and splitting samples according to protocol. Strong data entry skills, including accurate and timely entry of patient and test information into the Touch system and medical record systems. Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality patient care and customer service in a clinical or laboratory setting. Comfort working with a broad patient population, including pediatric, adult, geriatric, and cancer patients. Ability to learn quickly and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment, with an expectation to adapt rapidly during and after training. Willingness and ability to float between multiple locations from Newport Beach to Manhattan Beach and throughout northern and central Orange County. Reliability and flexibility to work varying start times within an 8-hour shift between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM, depending on location needs. Additional Skills & Qualifications Hospital experience or previous work in high-volume clinical settings is beneficial. Experience working with geriatric patients is helpful. Externship experience in phlebotomy or a related clinical area is acceptable, with a demonstrated ability to learn quickly. Familiarity with medical records and patient registration systems. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support both patient interactions and team collaboration. Ability to travel to training locations in Wildomar, Tustin, or Los Angeles for a full-time, 40-hour training week, with hotel accommodations available if required during that period. Work Environment You will work primarily in a busy patient service center and walk-in laboratory setting, with your home site based in Brea, CA. The environment is high-volume, with the center seeing approximately 170 to 200 patients per day and requiring efficient, organized workflows. You will use the Touch system and related medical record tools for order entry and documentation, and you will work with standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including centrifuges. The role requires regular floating to multiple locations across northern and central Orange County, Lakewood, Seal Beach, Fullerton, Los Alamitos, and as far as Manhattan Beach, as well as openness to occasional training at regional facilities. Shifts are 8 hours in length, with start and end times varying between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM depending on the site's operating hours. During the second week of the training program, you will complete a 40-hour workweek to learn entering and processing procedures, with hotel accommodations available if travel to the training site is necessary.
